Pent (Pen-House) Saijiki Fuyuginga In The New Sailor Square Bottle

You can get this ink from the Pen House store on Rakuten, but it says Pent on the bottle. I bought this from Vanness due to its description of Royal Blue, but the label looks purple, so I was pleasantly surprised once I inked my Platinum 3776 Chartres Blue.

I will say that if you like the sapphire blue color ranges you will probably like this ink. It behaves, shades and sheens very similarly to Bungubox Sapphire Hatsukoi, which was my favorite blue ink, but now I'm not so sure! Although Sapphire is an overall lighter color and the shading is a little more exaggerated. Both inks flow well, are very wet, saturated and are some of the smoothest inks I have used. The only down side for both inks are the dry times being a little longer than less saturated inks. The Fuyuginga is more true blue, sheens easier and has a green sheen that is visible in writing as the BB Sapphire is only visible in splashes.

You can see how similar they are, the top half is Fuyuginga, and the bottom is BB Sapphire:

The scans are generally a little brighter and reduce the sheen, but I find offer a good medium for direct comparison. A scan of Fuyuginga on Tomoe River:

On Maruman Mneumosyne Spiral notebook, surprisingly the fuyuginga barely sheens compared to the others, but the shading is still quite noticeable:

Here you can see some of my bottles compared. I put one of my bottles of Bungubox Sapphire in a PenBBS bottle as I do not like the short stubby bottles due to the poorly designed ink well and the cap which gets stuck and sticky too much. The best bottles I have used are Parkers old Penman Bottles and Sailor's tall bottles. I am eager to try Akkerman's bottles when I can find an Akkerman ink I like that much.

Lovely review of a very nice ink. Thank you for taking the time & for including one of my favourite blue inks (Hakodate).

I’m a fan of the Pent House Saijiki Line. I especially enjoy Ebizome.

Thanks! This is my first Pen house ink, but definitely not my last.

Here is a Waterproofness test I did for those that care, I just ran some water over that portion of the paper for 30 seconds. You can see Sailor have this waterproof pink and/or light blue that underlie many of their inks. Side note: I find that Maruzen Nihombashi River Blue is predominantly that light blue color:

Thanks for confirming catalyst. Are you sure that this ink is manufactured by Sailor ? I went on Rakuten website and it's not specified that Sailor produces this ink.

As sure as I ever could be: the box/bottles are the same, they smell the same, it sheens similar enough, they feel the same on paper and of course it also says that on Vanness website: https://vanness1938.com/collections/pen-house-ink

haha Im a big sailor ink fan and my bank account is the only thing stopping me from owning them all.

Thanks for all the info. I'm also a big Sailor inks fan... I was searching for a true red ink for a long time and then I purchased the Sailor Irore ink several years ago. I bought 17 bottles of that ink back then and don't regret it. It's still my favorite ink. Irore was supposed to be a limited edition ink but they reissued it some time ago. I don't know if the two different batches look identical. With some companies batches can sometimes vary a lot.

I understand very well when you write that your bank account is the only thing stopping you from owning them all. I could say the very same thing.

Your pen name "catalyst" is an excellent choice.

Wow! Thats a lot of ink! The only bottle I bought duplicates of was 2 of Bungubox sapphire. I was just looking at Irori yesterday, I have Maruzen Shu-Urushi and I love it. But I wanted a brighter red sometimes, so I am trying to decide between irori and pilot iroshizuku momiji.

Good review, and great comparison pictures. I like the new bottle. I have BB Sapphire, and it's probably my favorite ink, so this is tempting.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
