Hello fellow Fountain-heads,

I’m looking for pens that fit these criteria:

  • Slip-on or snap-on capping mechanism

  • 14k nib

  • No hooded nibs, inlaid nibs or “fingernail” nibs

  • No slippery metal sections

  • Out-of-production/used/vintage are all fine :)

  • Budget $150

So far known to me:

  • Pilot Celemo

  • Pilot Custom FK-700R

  • Pilot Deluxe Urushi

  • Pilot Grance

  • Pilot Stargazer/Stella 90S

  • Platinum PTL-5000

  • Pelikan P380/381

What else is out there?

Platinum 3776

Edit: scratch that, not a gold nib, nice pen though.

Montblanc 144. Pens with two tone 14k nibs preferable because of updated section. If you don't like two tone nibs, older pens have monotone 14k nibs.

Oops...disregard.. didn't see your inlaid/hooded nib restriction.

In the US on Amazon Ive found the Waterman Carène below $150 from time to time. Also my recent Lamy 2000 Cult Pens purchase was under $150.

The 3776 is available in both gold and steel nibs. They have screw caps, though, not slip caps.

Im not sure if S.T. Dupont has something for $150, but Id recommend them if they do. Their snap cap and nibs are terrific.

Very good point... I 'stole' this pre-owned ST Dupont Olympio XL with an opening bid several weeks ago for <$120.00 It is an amazing writer. I think I got very lucky. It did need a good cleaning and has a slight ding in the barrel, but its a keeper for me.

If you can raise your budget by ten bucks, consider the Parker Sonnet/18k F nib from Amazon in black lacquer and gold trim. Any change in this combination of color/design and nib size raises the price. FYI.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

If 18K is acceptable, a number of 70s-80s Watermans are possible, including the original and revised versions of the Gentleman.

Thanks for all the great suggestions so far!

I hadn’t considered some brands at all, like Aurora, Omas, ST Dupont, Cross, Montblanc. And for brands that were in my sights, I didn’t know they had models that fit my criteria, like Platinum, and especially Parker and Waterman.

Good to know that my dislike of screw caps doesn’t limit my options too much :D

I realised my specifying 14K was arbitrary – 18K is good too.

Limiting your collection based on your tastes is important. Otherwise, you chase the flavor of the day or moment. If I had to start my collection all over again, I would define what I was going to collect based on my known tastes and writing styles.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
