Gaviota Gigante

Recommended Posts

The nib can say "Big Blackbird"

But Gaviota Gigante just seems less classy. Giant Gull? Below is the truly terrifying Gaviota Gigante, pen, then bird.

I might have preferred the name Grúa Grande (Large Crane)

A smaller Gaviota to accompany the Giant one, lever filler and a Blackbird nib too …

Lovely! Much less terrifying than the gigante one! Thank you for sharing

Could you show us the nib and lever as well?

How long is the pen?

Any markings on the bottom of the barrel?

Closed with the cap on 4 ¼ in (11 cm) Posted 5 1/2 in although I never post the cap...

Imprint at the top of the cap, you see some in the first image, no imprint on the bottom of the barrel, but another imprint on the section…

I really wanted this one. I think that the "crack" is a deep scratch that I can fill. I will let you know.

I've been after a Big Blackbird, and that came up, so I confess, I hadn't known about it before. But now I do, I think I have to add the Giant Seagull to my wish list (and I love the name: the logo on your new acquisition is I think my favourite of all the MTs!)!

Do add more pics when you've got it and done it up!

There was a mystery just finished on eBay. It outpriced me again, and I think I'm going to need to do some more serious budgeting if I'm to get one. But anyway, it looked pretty similar to this OP one, but was marked Blackbird on the clip, Big Blackbird on the nib, and the imprint was apparently too worn to make out but 'something Gigante' on the barrel. I couldn't see the logo but I think they said it was the Blackbird logo, which altogether would probably make it a Big Blackbird/Gaviota Gigante hybrid, assuming there was no separate 'Big Blackbird' itself in Spanish for the Spanish market. I wonder if the winner will show up here with it to enlighten us...?

Here it is all cleaned up.

The cap was just scratched. The trim is severely brassed, so I saw no good reason to totally remove the scratch. After a standard polish, the scratch is not too bad.

The nib is huge, very fine, and a bit flexy.

The pen was smaller than I thought it would be, 5 inches, so more of a standard length but a bit fatter in girth.

Yes, I was outbid on this one too!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
