Hello fellow pen-lovers,

I have always loved fountain pens. My husband gave me a Montblanc pen for my birthday many years ago. But I haven't used it for a long time. Recently my interest was rekindled when we met a young man whose grandfather has owned a pen repair store in Tel Aviv for many years. I recently had the opportunity to go there and meet the grandfather and talk about pens. He looked at my writing and chose a Platinum pen for me. I told him I preferred to use non-permanent ink as I am not a very careful person. He looked me in the eye and said, "you are old enough to be careful."

I'm working at being more careful.

Welcome to our little corner of the universe from a pen user in San Diego. One of the joys of using fountain pens now is that we are in the golden age of inks and there are more brands and colors of inks than one can imagine. Get a look at the marvelous Japanese inks marketed by Iroshizuku--- so many great colors to lust after and amazon has pretty good prices.

What he said to you tickles my funny bone. I’m well over old enough to be careful, but there’s a hint of Yama Dori on my left thumb. Welcome and enjoy the ride.

Welcome from a fellow West Coaster now living in North Carolina! Love the story of the shop owner — what pen did he choose for you?

Whenever you are fed up with life, start writing: ink is the great cure for all human ills, as I found out long ago.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Thank you, everyone, for the warm welcome!

After researching online, flyingpenman, I believe the pen he chose for me is the Platinum #3776 Balance Maestro. Not a fancy pen. But since I don't know much about pens, it's fine. He had me write to see how I held the pen and how I wrote with it. It was a great experience! I will look into those inks that were recommended by OCArt and also the Seattle Pen Club, mentioned by ehemem. Thanks, all!

Hello and welcome!

Lovely story that. Do you have pictures of the shop and the Grandfather?

Did he have any stories or wisdom to share?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
