The problem may be, that it has become commonplace that if you go to a specialist forum, you expect inside knowledge and sharing of up and coming products. This is far from unusual on the internet, with its ability to inform (and ill-inform) globaly with great efficency. There are plenty here who have seen the new products before the offical public release, so there will always be people willing to show their early information. Chances are they have read the forum rules here about as much as they have read the terms and conditions of sotfware installs.

I understand the rules here, but new members will always feel frustrated initially at being told to stop discussing what they may have come here for. I agree with them, as I like to see, debate and build interest on new products before they are launched. We will have to elsewhere for this, and hopefully return for the other invaluable information and pleasent banter. For this is a great place to spend time.

It seems to be available at some online stores with pictures. Presumably this is pre-order or has it in fact been released?

Unfortunately, Montblanc doesn't feel that we should be a source for pre-release information, and they can afford to keep lawyers on staff.

Stores may have received pre-release photos, and put them up for pre-order. Whether or not they are allowed to do that is a matter for Montblanc to sort out.

Unfortunately, as requested by Montblanc, we are not allowed to have photos on FPN before the official release.

I wonder if there will be reference to James Dean's Porsche somehow incorporated into the design? I'm curious to see how this one looks.

Why, yes, they are fitting each pen's cap with a grain of sand collected from the EXACT crash site on California Route 46. Just kidding. :)

Seriously, WHY James Dean who did only 3 films before dying despite his great acting skills. There are better actors with longer list of films to their credit including Marlon Brando whom he mimicked like a kid.

ALSO, why so few film personalities among almost a 100 people Montblanc honored with special pens? So far, just 3 from film world: Marilyn Manroe, Walt Disney, James Dean pens and Hitchcock ink.

Regarding the James Dean pen though, I will certainly hope to see some red in there; because to me James Dean is 'Rebel Without A Cause', and that red jacket immediately pops in my mind.

I too have the same STRONG feeling about possible the redness in the design elements. Gotta be a red and white theme! The red jacket of Dean's is as popular as the Tag Heur jacket Steve McQueen wore in Le Mans.

It's simple. They do the ones they think will sell. Not on merit, but on possible revenue. They think more people will buy a James Dean than pen representing a hairy director (all be it a genius)

More than sales, it is the total eyeballs they can grab or amount of publicity they can gain that drives their decision when it comes to which great personality to choose to honor. James Dean sure is a better bet than Kubrick for that reason. More than that, simply by association, great men and great pen - that's the whole idea behind the campaign that spanned decades. Revenues from special editions represent not even their 1% total earnings, I am sure. Besides, most special editons are bought as gifts and given as gifts across the world and more often than not bought as gift not with one's personal moneys but as corporate expenses - which makes the big price tag immaterial for them as well as Montblanc. Of course, nuts like us spend our hard earned money to buy the regular editions regularly and special editons once in a while. That said, who among those who love writing does't love a beautifully made pen that can last a generation or two? Give me a GT 149 and I don't mind stopping talking.

  • 4 weeks later...

So anything new?

I stopped at my local dealer the other day and they showed me all the editions, including the 99. A pretty cool pen. Still not sure if I am getting it or not. I saw some pictures on a different community site. A German one ;)

I am invited to the release event end of November. I will takes some pictures then!

Tom you're such a gentleman, and that is perhaps why we all love you. You put us all to shame. I repent.

I love tom's photographs, I also love his font size and spacing. His are the only posts I can read without glasses and it makes me feel yonger. Yep I love Tom :)

~ Pen Nut:

May the close of 2018 and the arrival of 2019 bring you a wholly unexpected pen of delightful quality!

Thank you so much for the very kind encouragement above.

I wish I could buy the 99...35grand is too much for a writing instrument :)

They told me that almost all of the 99 are sold...

I don't know which one I am getting...or if I am getting one at all.

At first I thought meh...but the longer I am looking at it...maybe the red one. Not sure yet.

Will keep you updated!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
