Looks more like cedar blue to me...

The seller was asked and he confirmed 'it is green though in some pictures it looks blue'.

Good luck - it would be a good buy if it is nassau green. Let us know how it turns out.

Well, neither the seller said anything about the date code nor did I ask him about that.

I think it's really green. The thing is green colours are notorious for not showing up correctly in some photographs. I recently had that problem when I tried to take a photo of an olive green 45. It kept on coming out black unless I shone a light directly on it. When you try to adjust to make the green show up, the other colours go all wrong. Looking forward to hearing the outcome of this.

Count me among those that looked at the photos in the original listing and said "Naah -- Cedar Blue."

I'll admit that the ONLY duplicates on 51s in my stash are a couple of Cedar Blue 51 Vacs (well, if you don't count one Black 51 Vac and one Black Aerometric).

For your sake, Khan, I hope it is green. But it looked blue to me. Bad lighting maybe?

Well, it was a gamble I found myself willing to play. And especially when the seller confirmed it was green after being shown pictures of green 51.

I hope it turns out green. If not, addition of another cedar would not hurt. :)

Todd, the pen would first be delivered at a UK address as it was purchased for me by a friend there along with nine other 51s plus some other good pens. Then he will ship the pens at my address in Pakistan. So be patient please. :)

Would definitely tell you the date code. BTW why don't you tell me the secret behind the date code. What year the SJ nassau green was produced? 1947? 1948? Or...?

  • 2 weeks later...

Here is the (deep green Vac 51) pen side by side with a cedar blue. No date code on the barrel. Obviously the color does not match a cedar blue. What is it?

The color is almost (or a bit darker than) forest green.

Side by side with forest green (earo).

There are some navy blue 51s out there. To make things more interesting, towards the end of the Vacumatic run, Parker made some of the pens out of aero 51 plastic and some out of VS plastic. I've seen and handled both. No date code could be telling....

I have repaired a 51 made out of the gray VS plastic. If this matches either aero 51 plastic or the blue used in the VS, you have an uncommon pen.

Ron, it is green. But not the Nassau green. The last picture shows the pen side by side with an aero forest green.

It looks blue on my monitor. All of the pictures of the pen look blue, and this is the monitor that I use when editing my pen pictures, which are pretty accurate.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
