Cheapest Pen You Would Have Nib Work Done On?

The only one that I have had done is a TWSBI 580 with a B nib. I didn't have a pen with a custom nib but had tried one.(amberleadavis the enabler hard at work) I didn't send it off immediately, but used it for a while. Two to three months. I wanted to make sure I wouldn't regret it. I haven't. When it came back, in the box was a Jinhao 598 which had its M nib stubbed to match the 580's B. I would never get the $35 plus shipping back in a sale. It's a pen I paid $50 for. I have no intention on selling it though.

But like others have said, is there something about the pen that would make you want to do that as opposed to other options available. Regardless of cost.

I'm actually surprised you're having to smooth and align a Loom since F-C nibs have a reputation of being smooth out of the box. Aligning and smoothing (in that order), I would do myself. And I'd be very conservative about the smoothing. In my experience, correctly aligning the tines will take care of most "smoothing" problems.

For nib grinding (I use cursive italics exclusively) I would rely on a nib technician. For a lower price (under $50) pen, I'd be more inclined to either get a pen with a swappable #6 nib that I can replace with an italic from Goulet or Nemosine or get a TWSBI or Lamy Safari with the factory italic nib.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
