Is The Scala Out Of Production?

It seems like it is impossible to find anybody who offers a wide selection of the Scala in nib/color choices. Is the Scala discontinued or just outselling its supply?

Just checked at La Couronne du Comte in the Netherlands. They have several Scala's on offer.

Neat, they have some other Lamys I didn't know existed!

This is speculation on my part. I think the Lamy Scalas are still in production, but that they aren't on the roster of pens marketed for US distribution. I find that there are some pens in the Lamy line that can only be purchased from foreign online vendors.

It has been some time since I watched the Goulet interview with the Lamy folks, but I vaguely remember them saying that with the new Lamy Distributor they were hoping to create a market for more of their product lines.

Yeah, I believe that another thread on this forum mentioned that the Lamy boutique in San Francisco would (or already have) have the full product range available. So I think the San Fran location may be the one to get in touch with to get hard to find Lamys. There was a liquidation of LamyUSA (the old distributor) that just happened, and I think they were selling the Scala for the absurd price of $28 USD.

I missed getting the Scala from the LamyUSA closeout - they cancelled my order saying they were sold out.

I do notice Goulet, as well as the San Francisco Lamy store, now carries the Accent, a pen that was previously unavailable in the USA.

The Lamy Scala is in production, only Scala Ti is being discontinued as a color. Model is widely available, in multiple finishes and with steel or gold nib

I must get round to buying a Scala, if only to figure out why Lamy still produces a pen that looks like the Studio's ugly sister complete with all the annoyances of the Studio (slippery section, razor-sharp step), at a higher price.

Anyone a fan of the Scala?

I have a Scala Black, steel nib, which I got in a closure sale. It's a decent pen. It is not specifically pretty, nor ugly to my eye. I like it better, visually, than the Studio. I very much dislike the clip on the Studio.

I probably wouldn't have bought it at full price. Nor will I buy the Studio at full price. I MIGHT buy the Imperial Blue at a stiff discount...because I do like that colour.

Now if they would make an Imperial Blue Aion....... :puddle:

I like the Lamy Scala more than the Studio. Both have metal section, but the Scala is a lot easier to use for me. I also prefer to use the gold nib on the Scala. The writing experience is very nice.

I wish there can be more interesting finishes on the Scala. And maybe lower the price too.

I have the Glacier Scala, and while the gold nib makes a big difference, I do love the pen and much prefer it to the Studio. The grip looks like it should be slippy, but I don't find it to be so. Might be because it only tapers slightly so you get a relatively even grip on it so no desire for your fingers to slip down.

Is the step from the barrel to the section as sharp as on the Studio?

It's not the slippery section that puts me off using the studio ( I own one but don't use it much), it's the razor-sharp step.

Is the Scala any better?

It is similar - though the section is long so you need t be holding it high up to notice - I don't feel/notice it in the crook of my hand.

Sounds like you need to try one in a store to see if it works for you.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
