Inky T O D - Ink Pen Paper And Handwriting Musings #5 - Which Ink Makes Your Handwriting Look The Best?

Inky TODs are Topics O'Day and are meant to generate conversation about a particular topic. Yesterday, my beloved nib guy (who is also a penpal) sent me the following following:

I was contemplating on some of the things you expressed about your handwriting.

I like to know what your opinions are concerning this matter as we leave our marks behind with the pen we use.

Personally, before I go six feet under, I like to impress my daughter and everyone that is left behind with the knowledge that I have acquired and mastered three handwriting script, of which I deemed most useful: Fraktur for the times when I want to be a little mysterious, Spencerian for all the times I like to show off, and for the everyday hand italics. These three scripts, I am currently nurturing and to perfect. The closer I get to it, the more I like it.

You have told us about your handwriting - what you like, what you dislike, which scripts you like and which you will learn - now tell us about the inks that you like, what you like about them, and which inks make your handwriting look better.

For the best handwritten reply (or perhaps more than one great reply), I will send out a gift. (Nothing huge, but you can be surprised.) Enter as many times as you want. Only the handwritten posts will be considered for special gifts, but all posts are appreciated.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

The inks are what I have been using all week, except I added Diamine Bilberry and Levenger Cobalt to the line up.

I don’t have a perfect ink. I have a favorite, Platinum Carbon Black. It’s a good black, minimal shading, good dry time, reasonable permanence, makes most nibs feel nicer, makes pens take longer to dry out. I’m not opposed to a shading black but when I want black I tend to want something as pleasing as the bits of fine pre printing press books I’ve seen in person. (There’s a lot of other nice black inks mind, which is why I go for favorite)

For basically everything else I don’t yet have a favorite. Shading inks look the best usually with my writing. They’re lively and vivid, even if the color I’m using is subdued or businesslike.

If you held a gun to my head and said I had to keep it to 2 ink bottles, the second would be a blue black.

Your handwriting definitely looks best dressed in blue! (But maybe that's just me being biased towards Diamine Eau de Nil... )

:D Eau de Nil is one of my favourite inks, too.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
