Ostrich Flower Series Sampler ( On Going )

Ostrich ink is a very very old name in ink manufacturing in China and last year they bring out their first ever set of color ink in the form of the " Flower Series " at 15ml ea. for a collection of 12 colors; I recently get hold of a set of this in the plain form ( there is also the same set but with gold glitter ). A lot of back and forth communique with the factory tech finally get me informed that while the ink is not marketed or intentionally designed for mixing it is none the less mixable. So I set out to do a sampling of the ink and the combo

The combo will have to wait a bit later but I've shoot a sample of the ink as they are

The text is written with a 3B pencil and the gray card is a Kodak 18% gray for those who know how to color balance it; the paper is Rhodia dot pad. I forget to put the name of one of the color, that one is termed y the Mfr " Withered Sakura "

Beautiful! Thanks for making us aware of these.

For me Ostrich has always been the same old boring line-up of Black, Blue, Red, and Blue-Black (although someone gave me a bottle of their green and it's decent but has a horrible chemical smell), so it's nice to see them finally branching out and tapping into the current FP fad in China.

Is that a little bit of sheen I see in the concentrated corners of "Grass"?

Sheen those are not , shading yes , and except for the yellow the set shown some degree of shading. I doubt one can see much unless one use a very wet M or B nib or as in this test , using a dip pen. And oh that old 901 green, pretty eye catching bright green and for decades and decades that is literally the only green ink out there in China.

Well, surprise surprise, I go back and check with a loupe and find that there is indeed sheen but not on the " Grass" instead it was on the other end, the " Sky Viridis " likely unale to be seen on the photo but I have the piece of paper before me and there is some separation and sheen of sheen in a yellow / fresh green hue; I'll have to break out the DSLR I guess

Yeah, a student was really excited to give me a bottle...as it was the only "exotic" ink color made by a major Chinese ink manufacturer at the time.

It's nice for what it is, but it has been neglected in the back of the drawer ever since I acquired a bottle of Herbin Lierre Sauvage.

I look forward to your future posts about these new inks as you try them out.

Now so many Chinese ink companies are producing sets of all the main colors.

Thanks for the nice array. They look good, as a plausible representation of the plants involved. Best offer: also as non-glitter option.

Thank you for sharing these with us. I hope you can show us more.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

  • 1 month later...

Can these be purchased as separate bottles somewhere? I think I need me some Sakura and Chestnut (especially the former).

Oh I wasn't sure where to get them in the U.S. But I see now that I can get them from Aliexpress. These are for dip pens only, right (those without gold powder)?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
