Rohrer & Klingner Verdigris

DeAtramentis Sahara Grey

Pilot Iroshizuku Fuyu-Gaki

There a thousands of inks out there and most are really fun inks. I would suggest going to Goulet Pens, Anderson Pens or Vanness Pens - all online - and look at their ink samples. Write down the names of 6, 8 or a dozen, then come back here to FPN, and go to Ink Reviews, Index of Inks and look up each one. Once you have decided which ones to try, but samples and have fun playing around with them. Then you will get a better idea of what you might like.

What brands are generally available down under? Shipping costs to Australia could be prohibitive for many inks we might recommend.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Thanks for the responses guys!

Think I'll just respond to you all in one go here:

-Sailor Jentle inks are quite nice but I already have a few bottles so think I'll try something else1

-Robert Oster inks are interesting, fire and ice in particular I really would like to try.

-We have most of the common brands down here which is nice

-Fuyu-Gaki looks like an interesting colour, also Anderson pens samples seem like a nice idea so might have to do that sometime.

-Registrar seems pretty bland and boring to me personally

-To be honest I like most colours and shades, but I think this time I would like a deep, saturated colour intended for recreational purposes.

I've narrowed down my choices so far to Robert Oster-Fire and Ice, Fuyu Gaki, P.R D.C Supershow and Colorverse Andromeda.....hard decisions, think I might just get them all lol

I tried a sample of Colorverse Andromeda on a whim, and I love it. I thought it would be too much like Yama-budo, but it's what I always wished Yama-budo was (just a touch darker and a hint less pink). I haven't tried the others.

Yet another Sarah.

I take it that you are already familiar with the most common/known brands and you want to try something a little different?

For the last couple of days I've been eyeing the Birmingham Pen Company inks. I love the bottles and labels; I find them very elegant. They are rumored to be made by DeAtramentis, so they should be pretty good. I haven't tried them yet, though.

I can only show what I have, there are many definitions of fun, but I enjoy writing with each of these, and they are finally showing as I thought they could.

This is Kon Peki compared to the rest:

fpn_1524243578__kon_peki_and_co.jpg

Row 1 of the other colours: Mandarin, Fuyu Gaki, Orange Indien, Ancient Copper, Rouge Hematite, Diamine Poppy Red, Perle Noire.

Row 2: Chiku Rin, Vert Empire, Verde Muschiato, Ina Ho, Inti, Yama Guri, Perle Noire.

Row 3: Ama Iro, Équinoxe 6, Souten, Tsuyu Kusa, Asa Gao, Lie de Thé, Verdigris.

Row 4: Fuyu Gaki x 4 (checking for consistency on a notorious evaporator Sonnet), Myosotis, Ajisai.

To me Chiku Rin is the inveterate fun ink, Fuyu Gaki is just wild; I just got Inti, it might give Chiku Rin a run for its money.

There's also "cool colour" but inconsistent, Équinoxe 6 is my most extreme example: starts closer to purple, ends up way more greenish on the same page.

Do you want vivid boring monotone supersaturated ink?

Do you want two tone shading ink (some who like only supersaturated inks, call shading inks wishy-washy or pastel..........do you want that with sheen.

Do you want sheen?

There is now the glitter inks everyone is making.

What sort of papers do you have, the better the papers, the more chance any ink will be more satisfactory.

What ink do you now have???? And which don't you like, and why? Or which do you like?

What color?....in I now have 19 green, or greenish inks. Something I never expected, having stopped collecting purple inks to chase green.

We are living in the Golden Age of Inks.....if I was to hit the lottery, I could do an ink a day, and perhaps not get through them all in the coming decade..........knowing if no depression, many more inks will be made than the 700-800 now out there.

For every three inks you buy, buy some good to better paper.

Good paper is 90g (outside Rhoda and Tomalo(sp)) and costs twice as much as normal 80g copy paper. :(

Add two mechanically delivered cans of Coke for an even better paper.....two cups of Starbucks coffee for even better.

Writing is 1/3 nib width/flex, 1/3 paper and 1/3 ink and in that order.

I recently picked up bottles of KWZI pine Green, brown #4 and El Dorado as well as Iroshizuku Kon Peki. El Dorado has been a very intriguing ink. It's a yellow that isn't yellow. But not orange either. With hints of both. I would call it a gold. What surprised me is that the Kon Peki might be the least interesting of the four.

+1 for KWZ El Dorado, sorry now I only bought a sample (will rectify that); only making short jottings in my ink log with it atm but looking forward to using it more extensively.

Even nicer (to me) is KWZ Honey (which I did buy a whole bottle), not only a gorgeous color (probably a bit more work appropriate, too, than ED), it smells really nice, with the scent still noticeable after a few days.

Registrar's ink

Registrar's Ink is quite an interesting IG ink. Very enjoyable to watch dry and see the magic happening.

From my reading ESSR is better liked than Diamine's Registrar's Ink; and depending on the paper you can watch ESSR change from blue to blue black before your eyes.....different paper can take 5 days for the change to happen.

I ran a 17 pen, 40 page 'test' on it.........if you are into BB you need this ink. Even if you are not into BB, this would be good to have, just to watch the color change.

One of the longest threads in FPN history is on ESSR....40-50 pages.

Sandy1 calls it mischievous, I call it 'sneaky'. 110ml, at a real fair price.

I think a two tone ink would be interesting, I really like apache sunset so something similar would be cool!

To be honest I have to many inks (okay not that much compared to you guys, but enough to make it pointless listing). I've really been liking all my 1670 J'Herbin inks lately, so something similar would be cool.

I use a whole array of papers but they're mostly fountain pen paper.

As for inks I don't like...I tend not to enjoy dry-monotone inks, I'm really not a fan of Lamy Blue-Black and Parker Quink as examples (love my Pelikan inks though). I honestly like most inks I have in terms of their colours, with the exception being Noodler's Bsar, I guess I just expected it to look a lot nicer on paper, but it just seems like a boring red to me.

ESSR Registrar seems super cool!!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
