Pictured is a Unbranded ( Modified ) Piston Filler .

Modified : Piston taken out of a Wing Sung 3008 and fitted to this one ( pictured ) to get a functioning piston lock !

Currently have 7 Piston Fillers ..

2 Being 2017/18 Wing Sung 3008 ( also the most disappointing ) ..

After some tweaking all but 1 ( W-S 3008 Gold Trim ) have functioning piston locks .

It got me wondering , since the parts seem to be interchangeable ( Mine were ) . Just how many models / brands of piston filler are there ?

Are they all made at the same factory out of the same components ?

Why buy a PenBBS for ? - If say the POP 3008 is more or less the same pen ?

And the more I troll FeeBay , the more variations / brands I seem to find ... (?)

A) Are they more or less the same pen ?

B) How many are there ?

C) Do they all come from the same factory ?

( Obviously the Indian / Pakistan / Japanese ? pens don't .. )

A quick look on FeeBay I found :

Wing Sung - 698 - 618 - 3008 - 5502 and 6118 (?)

Pen BBS 309

Lanbitou 3059

Noodlers

POP 3008

Caliarts Ego

660 (?)

+ All the various Wing 3008's ( 3008 - 2017 3008 - 2018 3008 )

As well all the unbranded pens based off the 3008

I think I have left out the Pakistan and Indian Piston Pens ..

I just purchased another Piston filler moments ago , might be a unbranded Caliarts (?)

Well , all these WS-3008 and its variations are to me all looped to be a single model, what differs is just the trim, specific on some minor parts ( and in some case more major one like the nib and feed ) but still they are basically the same pen still.

That stated, the Wing Sung 618 / 698 can claim to be different simply by virtue of its locked piston mechanism ( which is not the same as the same as the click lock on the stated ones ) and they are of different size too. The Caliarts Ego/Ego-II certainly a totally different one since it use a more classically Pelikan style piston but equipped with O ring seal on the piston body I consider that one of the better piston there and this yet another size also. The PenBBS 3009 utilize a similar one as the Caliarts but of a larger size and do not use any O ring, so yet another different one and different size.

But then all piston filler utilize the same principle of construction and mechanism , whether its the stated one or the top dollar Montblanc 149 , so in the end similarity is to be expected.

what is a pop 3008? havent seen a review of it yet :( is it a wing sung 3008 with a locking piston like the wing sung 698?

i been wanting one with a open nib, i have the wing sung 618 and like hooded nibs but want to try one that isnt hooded. i like the lock on the 618 which is why i havent gotten the 3008 but if the pop 3008 can lock and post, that would be great since the 698 doesnt post

I have a POP 3008 and hopefully a 2nd on the way .

How would you describe the locking function ? = Possibly as a friction lock ( Clicks in place ) ..

There is a video in the 660 Piston Filler post ... The 660 and the POP 3008 are identical except for maybe the cap ...

You can post the POP 3008 and not activate/move the piston .

Thanks for the suggestion on the 660 review. Maybe because I am new to fountain pens, but what's a piston lock? I thought it referred to the lock on the wing sung 618/698 so I didn't think it was there, didn't see you pull up on piston

Its a friction lock ..

So when you open all the way the piston locks open ..

So if you try to push ink out , there is initial resistance ( friction ) to stop the piston pumping the ink out ..

I think its more for accidental stuff and to resist gravity ..

Its not a lock in the sense it stops any movement at all ..

SO there is no need to pull the cap UP to dis engage .. ( Its a friction lock )

If you watch the video , turn up the volume and you can hear the piston make a nice clicking sound as the piston locks and unlocks ..

Now in some pens there is a lot of friction to overcome , other pens are soft , and other pens have nothing ...

The only pen I would consider using is one with a nice firm lock , POP 3008 / 660 .. The Wing Sung 3008 is disappointing ...

The two I had were zipo ..

After playing with one - I got it to soft lock , the other I firmed up the piston but no lock at all .

From my own experience I can not and would not recommend Wing Sung 3008 ..

The POP and the 660 though , very nice ..

Hence my 2nd bite on the POP 3008 , to see if the lock is as good as on the first .

So that's what the sound was, there was no sound for most of it so I thought you hit the wrong button when recording

I increased the volume 400% for the click , the rest is at normal recorded level .

The click is audible for the human ear , but the action cam is a little ?? ... for audio .

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
