It is not necessarily my favourite pen in terms of writing experience, but when it comes to beauty it is the one that jumps to my mind. I just marvel at it each and every time.

Wow! Never seen one like that, what's it called?

How about your top three? Five?

I can't narrow it down that far or even close to that so here are just a few random samples.

Wow, some real beauties there, Jar! The stand-out for me is that green floral maki-e - it's gorgeous.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Hello Jar,

You posted a pen, perhaps Standard brand. Fat with gray marble and a gold stripe.

As you know, I started a thread about fat sections. Your pen looks like a winner. Please tell us more about it.

Thank you,

Alan

It's the Faber-Castell caps that get me. They should be ridiculous but actually they're beautiful. The maki-e pens win the Jar collection beauty contest according to the camera, but a more modest pen can be spectacular in the hand. Sensational selection.

Hi, it is the Montblanc Dumas, the correct signature. The pen is based on the dimensions of the Montblanc 139.

Modest really can rule and be spectacular. I really enjoy very simple but very well made designs as well.

What is the second (uncapped) pen? I like the fat section.

Thank you,

Jar, your photographs and your fountain pens are mesmerizing--all of them! What kind of pen is this blue one (found with the painting of the bird and morning glories)?

What is written on this pen? Pretty cool.

There are simply too many, but OK I will play along. I think my most beautiful pen would be the Waterman 42 below. Honorable mention to the Astoria and the lapis Parker Duofold.

I've never met an ugly pen, just ugly nibs.

Really nice set, I keep gravitating towards Carènes and that iconic blue Pelikan.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
