Almost impossible to tell. It looks OK at first glance, but they have good laser etched nibs these days, so there isn't enough to go on from those pictures.

I would need to see the cap band and clip top, plus the feed. As it's a 145 type with platinised trim (very commonly faked) the chances of it not being authentic are higher.

Plus point is the length of the threads inside the section. :)

It's a cartridge in the pen unfortunately.

Bit confused by the section and the lack of any thread in the resin below the platinum band. Unless it's an older model where the cap simply clicks on, rather than pushes?

I also agree re the nib. My initial reaction when I first saw the photos was that it didn't look quite right.

The problem with those pictures is that we can't see the barrel threads, because it's never screwed onto the section with the cap off. There should not be any cap threads in the resin below the platinum band on the section, they would only be on the end of the barrel and just above the section. There isn't a problem with that, apart from the fact we can't see it in those pictures.

It can't be a push on cap because it's a 145 type not a 144 type. The push on cap was on the 144 with the gold band around the bottom of the section next to the nib. It's not that pen and doesn't have a slip cap.

The more I look at the nib, the more I think it looks OK. At least it has the correct collar. Not that a collar takes much to fake.

I don't disagree with any of the above. I've learned a lot about buying pens, and I've learned the hard way on more than a few occasions when I actually bought something that would 'never' come up again.

If you have a gut feeling that something's not right, go with your gut. Simple. Take a pass. Another pen will come up.

Looks OK to me as far as the pictures go. The nib has the left tine way misaligned (maybe even bent) though. And I personally wouldn't buy this pen because if the owner has already messed up the tines like that, who knows what else could be wrong.

Hi, i have just got a montblanc meisterstuck legrande gift set containing two sets of fountain pens. I was wondering whether they are real or fake as they have been given to me by someone. I would really appreciate if you could delve into your experience and help me out. Some pictures of the pens and the box are in the following links:

Sorry but these are fakes. The fountain pen doesn't have the correct internal piston filler, but has a "hidden" converter inside the barrel instead. AFAIK Montblanc pens don't regularly come in one box as a FP and BP set either.

I don't know. I've never seen the cone come off like that. Looks fake to me. Nib appears 'funny' too, maybe its the picture or the way it shines.

Have you seen one of in person before? I didn't even know they faked 146s to look like piston fillers from the outside. Pretty ingenious!

They do, and I've seen pictures of them on here before.

Please provide a reference to the thread(s) that you mention. While I'm an infrequent member these days, I'm here frequent enough to remember photos of fake PFs on 146s and 149s.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
