Inky T O D - Color Swatches - Ultraviolet Inks - Please Post Your Pictures - Inks Which Fluoresce

Members - and little kids alike - love invisible inks and secret messages. I have a huge fondness for Noodler's Ghost Blue. After years of using different inks (I have now sampled more than a thousand unique inks), I was looking for my doodle with Noodler's Proctor's Ledge, so I had my notebook and a strong UV light. Much to my surprise, I found a whole lot of inks fluoresce. So, here is where we can show some pictures.

It doesn't matter if the ink was advertised as UV reactive ink - just show us what it is all about. This thread is not for full blown reviews, just show us the ink under blacklight (or blue light, uv-a, ultraviolet light, filtered light, mercury vapor, LEDs ... you get the idea).

Here is the first sample, Vintage Sheaffer Permanent Red. This ink was said to fluoresce AFTER someone tried to tamper with it. The middle ghost is untampered and the side ghosts have water washes.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

From Irish Eyes and Zwack

zwack asked me to photograph and post "regular light" and "black light" photos of Blue Ghost and El Lawrence (aka "Sump Oil"), so here you go.

In normal fluorescent lighting, the page in my book of ink swatches for Blue Ghost looks like this:

fpn_1470619870__blueghost1a.jpg

Under black light, though, it looks like this:

fpn_1470619892__blueghost2a.jpg

And the "Sump Oil Green", as I call El Lawrence, under fluorescent lighting, looks like this:

fpn_1470619912__sumpoil1a.jpg

Under black light it looks like this. Although the photo was taken during day time, and the ink's fluorescence isn't as marked as it is with Blue Ghost and others, you can still see that it turns an attractive bright green:

fpn_1470619930__sumpoil2a.jpg

I hope that the photos are helpful.

Mercury vapor lights? They're special somehow? I have ancient mercury vapor lights at the new distillery. So my writings and distillery notes written with Noodler's Proctor's Ledge should look different?

Also I have to admit I can see some of the ink bottles glowing in the pictures but often can't tell what it is, especially in the Noodler's ones. I don't know every one of their inks by label.

When I was reading up on UV lights, the Mercury vapor lights may make the ink look different. Can you let us know?

I'll try and ID the bottles in the coming days.

Blacklight sources may be specially designed ... mercury-vapor lamps

So, maybe not your regular MV lights .... but hey, let us know.

Thanks for the info. According to the Wiki article the UV is filtered out otherwise people would get sunburn and possible eye damage from the UV rays. So my guess is these have the shielding, but apparently it's not 100%. So I'll try it out tomorrow and see.

Cool stuff though.

Sheaffer Skrip, with U-35, was advertised to be readable under ultra-violet light even after being washed away. In those days -- early '60s -- no one talked about an ink being flashy or flouresce-ing. Sheaffer did not talk about tampering.

Amber, didn't you test the "after-rinse" readability of U-35 Skrip? I looked at your photos, but couldn't tell if U-35 had passed or failed. What was your judgment?

I can't find the dang links. I think it is cool and it was somewhat readable.

On the old mercury vapor lights at work there must be some shielding as I don't get any special look to the Proctor's Ledge.

Here is one the pages from my notebook.

And here are parts under UV light. Check out the Pilot Erasable Disposable fountain pen - the U-Pen.

I didn't expect Diamine Bougainvillea to show.

De Atramentis Goat has a tad bit of show as does the Levenger Cardinal Red (which sheens like crazy). The Noodler's Park red and Platinum red also make showings as does FPN's VCV. Check out how Diamine Gerbera and Sunset both turn pinkish red.

The background on the left is Diamine Terracotta. The Rose is Akkerman #17 and the stem is Diamine Delemare.

Everything looks different, but I wouldn't say it was really UV reactive like Ghost Blue, but something is going on.

The blue on the other side was three different blues that were washed.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
