Ink Experimentation (Not Pen Related At All)

I did some home shop experimentation this weekend. I wanted to make my own layout fluid. If you don't know what that is, it's a quick drying fluid you brush onto metal when doing metal work. you can then scratch very visible lines for layout work. I mixed shellac with noodlers baystate blue and also a batch with some red leather dye. The BSB performed really well, I think alcohol is the only thing that really dissolves BSB too.

The BSB based stuff make a much cleaner line, I used it in the shop last night and was pleased with how it behaved. BSB is water based so there's some water in there but it doesn't seem to be an issue, there's also some water in the denatured alcohol I dilluted it with.
I think this was pretty cool and fun experiment, the strange ways you can use ink sometimes...
I am curious too, are there any fountain pen inks that are alcohol based rather than water based? And do you know of any wide brush of felt tip pens you can fill with ink? I think that might be a good application method for layout work.

I love Ink-sperimentations!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Nah I just needed some layout fluid for shop work and a bottle is 30 euros and a week away for me. Might as well make some when I got the materials. Bought some cheap brush pens online to experiment with, will see what happens with them.

If you run coolant and a mister you might want to be careful with homemade solutions. I know I've plugged up my mister with homemade layout solutions. Shellac does weird things to nozzles.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
