I'm looking for an orange that is like J. Herbin Orange Indien but with more shading, and darker in that the lightest aspect of it would be like orange indien and then the shading would be darker. Any suggestions?

This sounds almost like a red-brown, actually.

I'd be curious to see a red-brown recommendation to look at? I didn't know such a thing existed. That said, that KWZ Monarch looks like what I'm looking for, only I can't seem to find it anywhere in the USA :(

So, that's what I get for looking at reviews of Monarch on a not-calibrated display. Now I see it is too brown for what I want mostly. I am looking for something like how the large work Monarch looks in this review of the KWZ Monarch http://www.pencilcaseblog.com/2017/01/inktastic-kwz-monarch-ink-review.html, which is different from how it looks in the normal writing that follows in that same sample.

It might be also be a question of using Orange Indien with another pen or nib.

You might want to take a look at Robert Oster Ng Special '15. It shades a lot and turns a little brownish in those areas.

Take a look around at the orange thread (link in my signature below).

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Take a look at Pilot Iroshizuku Yu-Yake. I much prefer it over Orange Indien.

Good to know. It was actually on my short list already in fact. I left a pen with orange indien uncapped for a bit (on purpose) and I quite like how it wrote initially. I left the jar open for 2 days and will see how that is next time I fill.

As well as Iroshizuku Yu-yake I love both Diamine Pumpkin and, more than anything else, Diamine Autumn Oak, one of the most shading inks I have found.

Yes, Lamy Orange is great (especially in a bottle). Otherwise Paper Plume Sazerac or Omas (discontinued?)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
