Hello To Everyone Out There In The Pen Universe!

I've lurked for a long time but have yet to introduce myself,

I discovered Fountain Pen Network a long time ago and it has been an invaluable asset as I've slowly sought my "grail" pen. Of course one important thing I've discovered that's it's like grasping at clouds. Every time I think I've found "the one" something intriguing pops up around the next corner. I've come to enjoy this quest and rather hope I don't discover it's end anytime soon.

A coworker reawakened my interest in fountain pens around seven years ago by handing me a Pilot Varsity. Soon the Pilot had been replaced with a couple of Hero pens and then my faithful Lamy 2000 arrived. Since then I've been through phases of hooded nibs to open nibs, vintage to modern, this brand to that brand and so on. At this point I'm not really loyal to any particular type, just the feeling when it is in hand and connecting thought to paper. The Lamy 2000 is still my constant companion and has traveled around the world and the standard to which i compare everything else to.

Not so long ago I had decided I would pause my fountain pen adventures for a while, just enjoy what I have. That lasted until I walked into a giant indoor flea market. I wasn't shopping, just walking and thinking. There in a case hiding behind wishfully priced gaudy chrome, steel nibbed pen sat a Caran d'Ache Geneve in gold godron who's price and been reduced several times. Looking casual while asking to see it was a bit of a challenge. It was still in the box having never been inked. I'm pretty sure I saw a light come down from the sky accompanied by angelic singing! It went home with me and is absolute perfection. Finding a pen like that for less than I've paid for a Hero has stirred the treasure hunter now. The adventure is on!!!

I owe tremendous gratitude to the members here. Without knowing it you have been my guides and my mentors in this wonderful and very personal hobby. You have helped me rebuild pens which intimidated me and taught me to recognize a gem like that Caran d'Ache hiding in the jungle.

From down in Alabama, greetings to all!

Welcome ZenWriter from a neighbor in Texas. I have followed a path similar to yours, slow seduction followed by total surrender. You probably have not reached the total surrender point yet. Very glad to have you here among kindred spirits!

Greetings and welcome to FPN.

Congrats on finding that nice pen. Others would find their way to you sooner than later. Enjoy using your pen(s).

Thanks for the kind greetings! I will work on taking some photographs and do a series of reviews of pens which have gone into close orbit around me. Sometimes when I look back I'm surprised at which ones I've sold or passed on and which ones I couldn't imagine living without.

Thanks Jar,

I haven't had the chance to get a Leman in my hand to truly experience the difference between the two yet. I've only seen it in pictures. Honestly I find this older version more appealing to my eye than the newer gold plated Leman. The deep lines and the narrow band between the cap and body give it a stately, less contemporary feel. This one practically writes by itself!

Too late! Low hanging tree limbs and I are already very old acquaintances. And that might have been a train just the other week, still getting my bearings. Thanks for the welcome!

Not sure if there is much story here, had to come up with something. Writing helps clear my mind and organize my thoughts and an old Chinese Buddhist monk and teacher of mine calls me Dao Chan (Zen Way).

Thanks for the welcome! My Lamy 2000 has taken on a shine from constant use. It is always nearby; an indestructible, always faithful, silky smooth writing companion.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
