Y'ello From East Tennessee

Hello! I meant to post an introduction weeks ago but it slipped my mind.

I'm a new member but have been reading through old posts for some time now. I've had fountain pens off and on since college and it turned into a hobby a few years ago. I already had problems in bringing home odd vintage typewriters, sewing machines and spinning wheels. At least I can hide the pens.

I mainly use and tinker with low end vintage pens but still have modern favorites, including a Lamy 2000 that was an early birthday present to myself. There's even a Rotring Core that followed me home from a clearance sale years ago. I still don't know what I was thinking.

Most recently I've been having fun cleaning up a handful of Sheaffer school pens (including one of the octagonal hooded versions) in the hunt for the perfect cheap vintage sketch pen. There's also a Parker 21 and a couple of 45's on the worktable that are nearly ready.

I must say the forums have been absolutely invaluable sources of information in getting started with cleaning and repair and reminding myself to be patient with progress. Thank you all!

And to anyone around Knoxville or passing through: I'm the unofficial pen person at the Jerry's in Bearden. If you stop by do say hello. We carry F-C and Rotring pens, Pelikan ink and FP friendly notebooks among other art supply goodies.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Good to hear from a local -- thanks! I can be found around the store on weekdays if it's helpful (except holiday weeks like next week).

Welcome!

<i>Many boys will bring you flowers. But someday you'll meet a boy who will learn your favourite flower, your favourite song, your favourite sweet. And even if he is too poor to give you any of them, it won't matter because he will have taken the time to know you as no one else does. Only that boy earns your heart-Leigh Bardugo

Welcome !

I suppose Parker 45s are widely available for sketching. Sheaffer School pens, or even NoNonsense pens might be good choices. Script cartridges are hard to find, but the abundant International Standard cartridge can be used. Open the flat end, with a push pin, then widen the hole with a nail. It is what I use exclusively, now.

What do you draw ?

Auf freiem Grund mit freiem Volke stehn.
Zum Augenblicke dürft ich sagen:
Verweile doch, du bist so schön !

Thanks for the welcome! That's a helpful trick with the cartridges -- thank you. I do a bit of urban and travel sketching with watercolors. Nothing fancy, I just like to think of it as a useful excuse for traveling more.

I quite like the 45's, though I worry wash proof/watercolor friendly inks could permanently clog their ink collectors? An ultrasonic cleaner followed me home yesterday, so maybe I could give testing out document inks a try...

I've been using refilled modern Sheaffer calligraphy cartridges in the school pens, mostly because we carry them at the shop so they were an easy to source option. They work fine but are noticeably not as well made as the originals or better internationals.

Welcome aboard!

From another East Tennessean on Bearden Hill.

Well, hi neighbor! It's amazing to find a fellow Beardenite.

My husband and I were just up on the hill yesterday having a bite and taking in the KP gridlock.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
