Greetings From China

Hi Everyone,

I've been hanging around this website for a good many years now and finally decided to check it out. A lawyer by profession, writing has been a huge part of my life and when I was given(in my 20's) my great grandfathers fountain pen and locked my eyes on the aged celluloid, gold nib and trim... I was hooked forever. In all the hustle and bustle of life trying to earn a living I somehow forgot about fountain pens, but, since starting to work in China about nine years ago I found myself with more time to grow my interest into what now sometimes borders on obsession :(( Expensive pens are not so important for me... it's always those beautiful nibs. However, when you get that combination of beautiful materials and an aged 14k flexy nib ... now you're talking.

Unfortunately, being a pen collector in China has become quite difficult in the past few years. The Chinese government have started to levy a 20-30% duty on all imported pens over $50 in order to protect a very large pen industry here in China. I've also had a few pens lost in transit, but, I'm persistent.

The FPN is quite amazing in terms of the amount of really useful information available and I also hope I can make some friends here too.

Cheers,

Mike.

Welcome & I hope you enjoy your time here!

Hello Mike and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Welcome, Mike !

Your great grandfather's fountain pen is such a precious heirloom. Can you tell us about it, please?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
