( Long time lurker...since 2013 I reckon, first post after I 'qualified'*.)

Hello all, greetings from a warm, tropical country in Southeast Asia.

Bit of background on myself: I work in the digital media industry (have done so for the past 5 years), and as a result have almost entirely abandoned the art of writing with pen and paper, resorting (yes, I said it) to it only when I had no other choice. Part of it was due to the fact that I spent almost two decades using bog-standard ballpoints and rollerballs (in my student days) and have picked up rather nasty writing habits. Pen death grip, 'drawing' the letters, and an overreliance on wrist motion (side-effect of lots of FPS gaming on a PC), more or less correlated with a persistent dull ache in my right thumb joint.

Over the years, I've upgraded the devices I use to interface with my machines (mechanical keyboard - absolute bliss to type on, ergonomic mouse - a Roccat Kone EMP if anyone's wondering), and the dull ache went away. I also shifted most of my note-taking into digital forms, so writing didn't seem like something I needed to worry about. (I also have appalling handwriting, I'm guessing they might pass for hieroglyphs, but I've never bothered to confirm it, or fix it for that matter.)

Late 2017, in a flood of curiosity, I bought a Pilot Metropolitan (actually, an MR3), and instantly felt like writing may not be an achy-forearm task after all. With the help of a friend and fellow FP enthusiast, I started exploring inks, papers, and reasons to write more (a bit unusual for me, given the work I do), for real this time, not just as a passing thought.

Now, I've always been fascinated at the idea of using a fountain pen, an everyday tool that seemed to require quite a bit of care and attention, but never got around to trying one until well after my student days were over (when copious amounts of writing was the norm). I suppose it helps that I'm also an avid reader of books (the printed-on-paper kind, mostly non-fiction), and it just seemed like a natural pairing. In any case, I had many reasons to try an FP but only needed one, and suffice to say I've discovered a new, enjoyable side to writing. Soaking in the wealth of information available (from FPN, r/fountainpens, Brian Goulet's channel etc) is a genuinely enjoyable experience.

But that's enough of my rambling, now. I look forward to engaging with the rest of the community in the days to come, and I shall leave you with a photo of two items that I started my journey with (well, those and my MR3). I have two more winging its way to me from the Land of the Rising Sun (No points for guessing which brand I went with...), so I'm definitely in it for the long run.

( * How did I 'qualify'? I acquired a fountain pen and started using it, of course. )

By the way, is that a Pilot Custom Heritage 91 in your picture? I have one with a Soft Medium nib - it's my frontline work pen and all-around favorite writer. A lovely pen.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Cheers all, and thanks for the warm welcome. May your inks never bleed and your feeds never...er...dry out.

Why hello there, fellow KL'ite.

Yes, it is a CH91, FM nib. It's also my EDC pen, alongside my Metropolitan/MR3. I have a Decimo F-nib on the way, so the 91 will have an EDC companion, and the Metropolitan will become my full-time desk pen.

I love the heft and feel of the Metro, but I'm worried that in my haste I may accidentally uncap it when it's clipped to a shirt pocket / messenger bag strap / notebook wire binder and ... well ... Murphy's law and all that. The 91's proving to be an absolutely lovely writer though (on Rhodia and Mnemosyne paper, as well as the printer paper @ work), and the capacity of the CON-70 is phenomenal.

Thank you for the welcome sir, I shall endeavour to live up to that expectation.

Photography (product/still life, low-key) was/is one of my few hobbies, prior to this newfound fascination with all things FP-related, so I figured it'd be a nice way to introduce myself. No portfolio, though, just shared it privately via FB, IG, G+ and the like.

I hope combining your new found interest with the old one will give you much pleasure and you'll share the results in a public way too. :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
