Sobriety And The Artistic Impulse: A Nyt Piece

"Does Recovery Kill Great Writing?" Put another way, can a writing artist continue to achieve art, continue to fuel the artistic impulse, if he or she quits alcohol or drugs? The question should answer itself, but nearly every great drunkard-writer's answer would probably differ from our own.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

Thanks for posting the link. That was a fascinating story.

As to the author's question? Clearly the answer is "It most certainly does NOT kill great writing!

Years ago my mother told me thing she had heard or read -- an interview with some very well known jazz musician (don't remember who, sorry). He used to think that when he was high he played great. Then he heard the recordings he'd made while high, when he *wasn't* high -- and said that his playing was TERRIBLE! Just awful.

Apparently, it was a real wakeup call to the guy....

Hi,

I think it was Hemingway who said, "Write drunk, edit sober."

Hope we're all having a good weekend.

+1 This is one of my favorite quotes 😊

I'm of the opinion that wine is for creativity and caffeine is for productivity...but too much of either will make you feel sh*tty (this applies literally to coffee 😂)

For me it's like trying to run up the down escalator. I can never get to the top but I'm always in danger of crashing into a heap at the bottom.

It's only something I can battle but never conquer.

The devils brew, somebodys poison, the liquid leeching from rotten fruit. What is it that compels me to imbibe?

Yes, another 55-word story......

Alcohol Ain't All That Bad

"Why do you say that?"
"You know, when you go out with the guys, have a few, it's kinda fun."

"OK."
"When you're depressed, well...a few will help."

"And."
"Ticked-off, angry, mad, a few will calm you down."
"How about the four DUIs, eight DIPs, $7,500 in fines, two months in jail?"
"Ain't nuthin' perfect."

Hope we all have a good week.'

Regards,

George

EDIT: Here's another.....

At the Bar His 8th Double Scotch

He knew he was going to die.

Nothing could save him.

No hope.

Wait for it to happen.

The bright white light, finally he was crossing over.

"Mr. Jones."
"Mr. Jones."
He looked up at the domed light of a trauma bay.

"What happened?"
"You fell off the bar stool."

For me, alcohol never clarified my thoughts or increased my creativity. I always found it be quite the opposite. It has been a long time since I drank anything alcoholic. Now, coffee, that is another story. :)

I keep trying to drink a half-glass of red wine every day for the bioflavonoids and other alleged health benefits. But I can't seem to fit it into my schedule.

I'm on the hunt for a big enough half-glass.

  • 2 months later...

No alcohol in years, and i am a painter. Best ideas hit me in the middle of the night...caffeine. My Dog tags should have read "espresso" for blood type.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
