Two Mixtures - Black And Blue

Recommended Posts

I am searching for two suitable colours - a conservative black and a vibrant blue - for using in my fountain pens. I am rather traditional in my choice of colours.

The black ink should be somewhat water resistant and should not fade so much so as to become illegible in two or three decades. The blue ink should be vibrant enough to catch attention on white paper.

I have the following ink which I thought could be mixed on experimental basis.

1. Daytone Calligraphy Black (1800 ml) - advertised as 'India ink for fountain pen', a pigmented ink. Dark grey in colour.

2. Camlin Permanent Black (600 ml) - a well known ink brand in India.

3. Daytone Turquoise (1800 ml) - a dye based ink. Too light a colour for my taste.

4. Camlin Royal Blue (600 ml) - Washable dye based ink.

I have mixed these ink as follows-

3 parts of Daytone Calligraphy Black + 1 part Camlin Black = 4 parts of Custom Black.

3 parts of Daytone Turquoise + 1 part of Camlin Blue = 4 parts of Custom Blue.

I have used the Custom Black in my ASA Galactic (Jowo medium nib) and the Custom Blue in my ASA Maya (fine nib). The paper used is 75gsm copy paper.

I shall post the photos tomorrow along with the water resistance test results.

Interesting experiment. I like the color of turquoise blue+ Camlin royal blue mixture. I will try the same.

Your green was the color I got from a bottle of Noodler's Bad Blue Heron although website color samples show it as a dark blue. Two bottles of it write as teal in my pens. It's much more permanent than the above after a water soak.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
