Fountain Pens And The Business World.

I had legal papers that needed reading and signing before an up-coming business meeting. The task is, as the saying goes, 'done and dusted'. I used a 70 year old Mentmore fountain pen.

Do you use vintage pens in the 'real world'?

Yes, every day. I have a few desk sets that I have rotated using at the office that I keep inked up and I always have ink and some pens inked up at work to use at meetings for note taking. It is organizational policy to prohibit the use of electronic devices at large meetings as they are too distracting. We are never permitted to use personal electronic devices in regard work product due to security concerns. So, manual note taking, even for young fully electronic device oriented staff is required.

Well, as a journalist, I have to take notes and write all the time. So, apart from the work that has to be done on o PC, all the rest is done with my fountain pens. And I really enjoy it !

I want to work where you work! :)

I don't get to take as many pen and paper notes as I did a few years ago (higher percentage are on the laptop these days.) However, a good amount of writing as part of work is done with my fountain pens. Of these, a fair portion are vintage, and therefore venture into the "business world."

The company I work for is 85 years old, so I sometimes think about using pens that could have been used by my peers from earlier in the company's history.

Yes. always have done. But, since I got interested in pens, a few years ago, I have always carried two - a Montblanc 149 that I have had in my pocket every working day for thirty years, (apart from its trips to the Montblanc dealer, 25 years ago, since which time it has behaved itself) for signing things, and a fine nib Parker for making notes (the Montblanc has a medium broad, rather wet, nib!).

One of the nice things about old fountain pens is that one can use something that is between fifty and a hundred years old for its original purpose.

I now make notes with either a 51 or with an old Vacumatic. I used to use a ballpoint for notes, but I find scribbles made in pen easier to read...

There is always a Parker 51 Flighter and a Sheaffer OS Balance in the pen cup on my desk at the office. The Duofold Senior Deluxe long in the rotation blew a tine-tip. Others in the repair line are a Vac Maxima and a 51 Vac.

Other vintage FPs rotate in regularly. Occurred to me this week that retirement will mean I won't get to play with my pens all day, every day.

I review and draft complex documents and contracts constantly. Having a selection of pens with varied inks and nibs is very useful in my day to day. I use broader nibs for signing and note taking, and skinny nibs for markups. Right now, I have 8 different Pelikan pens on my desk!

I'm a corporate lawyer and use only fountain pens in all aspects of my work - taking notes, drafting documents, marking up documents and signing letters. I keep about 40 or so pens in my office, a majority of which are vintage (including a Montblanc L139 and a turquoise Waterman Patrician for a little extra flair). I also take 2-3 fountain pens with me when I travel on business; if I'm flying, these will generally be modern pens (e.g., a Pelikan 800 or my new Conid Bulkfiller). Most of my colleagues think my pen obsession is a bit eccentric, but I have no doubt that the enjoyment I get from writing with a beautiful and well-tuned fountain pen improves the quality of my work.

I never leave the house without at least one fountain pen. (ok, maybe when I mow the lawn I don't, or to the pool, though I'm tempted even then)

Every day at work I use fountain pens for taking notes. I use them for marking up papers. I use them to write notes to my son's teachers. Today it's a 1946 Sheaffer Valiant. Some days it may be a TWSBI, or Pelikan, or 1920's Waterman. They're all good, and used regularly.

Have to admit, Mentmore is a new one on me. Now I have something fun to look up. Thanks!

I am an attorney, and I use FP's all the time. I have a MB 149 desk pen, but mostly use my Conid because it holds ink like a whale, and I don't want to stop working with a client to re-ink. ;)

...So much ink, so little penmanship....

I used fountain pens when I was working in the business world and often had several on my desk at a time. Now, retired, I still enjoy carrying a fountain pen to use when out and about.

It is inconvenient when I have to go into factories, but for all other sorts of note taking and work I always have a FP

I have always been a Parker person, but lately I've acquirea a taste for the acrylic pens (ultra light!)

Im a civil litigator and trial attorney. I have been using fountain pens daily for work for some 18 years. I usually carry at least 3, a broad or otherwise wet nib for drafting written work on pads for dictation or taking notes at a deposition, a fine nib for marking up documents, and another fine nib for making small size notes in trial notebooks. I am fond of Japanese pens and use them daily. I keep at least one bottle of blue and black ink in my office and carry Pilot blue and black cartridges in my bag just in case a converter runs dry.

I have 2 Pilot Vanishing Points and use my matte black one when on trial because from the distance of the jury box it just looks like a generic black pen ( just like wearing a Rolex - which I dont own - using an obviously fancy fountain pen could be dangerous and have the jury think youre a pompous jerk so its verbotten in my book to display anything flashy at trial). I get enormous secret satisfaction from writing with a gold-nibbled fountain pen at trial with an ink of my choice without being obvious about it.

Ive also lately been getting articles I write published in The New York Law Journal all of which have been written with fountain pens of course.

Im the go to guy in my office whenever someone wants to talk about pens for themselves or as a gift for a loved one.

I have been using a Pilot red gel pen for red corrections but after reading here I think Im going to get some Noodlers red and use another fountain pen.

I'm a professor and I write all of my lecture notes for class longhand with a FP. I tend to rotate pens among my collection, but favorite Sonnet is almost always inked and there is a Sheaffer Dolphin desk set on my desk.

Owner of many fine Parker fountain pens... and one Lamy.

Boringly, I owned and used only one fountain pen in my consultancy and earlier as an employee. It and a matching pencil abetted every meeting. It might have been nice to have the options I have today, provided I were still paying attention to their exposition of their problem rather than admiring the pretty lines and lovely pen. ;)

I was taking care,of my dad’s affairs for a while. Signing lots of stuff all the time. I realized quickly that I must have black ink in at least one pen with me all the time. Not many signatures are accepted in anything else these days. The signature is legal but colors are not accepted by various electronic systems.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
