Highly Rec. Pilot Hi-Tec-C Coleto Multi Pens

The pen I carry so I don't have to EVER loan out a fountain pen for someone else to use (someone once dropped my favorite on the nib) is a Pilot Hi-Tec-C Coleto Multi Pen with 0.4 refills in it. The one I have (I have 3 more on the way thanks to the recent eBay 20% off coupon) was designed by fashion icon Mary Quant and has pictures of makeup bottles on it. I'm a makeup artist & when I saw it I had to have it. It writes incredibly smoothly and if I had to say something negative about it I'd say that it usually takes a couple of tries before the pen sticks out to write (mine has four colors to chose from). They can be very plain or very girly like mine as I've bought two sets of "limited edition" refills which have a tiny daisy and a double heart used to push down the color. There appears to be 12 colors to choose from for the refills in 0.3, 0.4 & 0.5. One good thing to note is that if you buy the decorative refill sets, you can take the plastic daisy or heart part and put it into a new refill of any size. If you can find it, there's also a pencil and eraser refill.

I received my third Coleto today. The hook for me was seeing Snoopy on some. I did see the Mary Quant ones and they looked very nice, especially the refill case. The Snoopy versions are 3 and 4 refills, while the one I got today is a flat top style in clear that holds 5 refills. The Snoopy versions with the dome cap work well, but the newest one has some issues with ease of clicking down then up.

I had to push the tip to get it to retract. The Pilot Hi-Tec C Coleto is the only one I’ve used that includes the push/retract knob on the refill. Pentel, Zebra and Uni Style Fit all require inserting the refill in holes.

Oh, by the way I got my Snoopy Coleto multi-pens at tokyopenshop.com which is based in Iowa. They come with a Snoopy on the refills. That site has the Mary Quant cosmetics versions, but the flower versions are sold out, and one I had not heard of that used stars on the refills.

My newest came from jstationery.com because thats where I could find the white/clear flat top Coleto. They are also in the US.

Is there a particular reason you went with a Hi-Tec C Coleto? I would say there are smoother pens.

I like the Uni Style Fit refills the most. I think the OP chose Coleto for the limited edition Mary Quant pen bodies.

I have Uni Style Fit, Coleto, Pentel i+ and Zebra multi-pens. While all are fine multi-pens, I think I like Uni Style Fit the most.

I just got a Coleto and love having 4 choices of what to write with. It's very handy. How often do they come out with special character editions.

That’s a good question. Not as often as Zebra Sarasa Select does. I’d recommend checking out Tokyo Pen Shop as they have a New Arrivals tab, as well as a Custom Multi Pens tab. They have redesigned the website, and I didn’t see the New Arrivals tab, but I wasn’t looking for it for very long.

There are some new Coleto ones now.

If you try by removing and putting the pen refills in, and try again, you can get them all to retract smoothly. I did that with the one that takes 5 refills, and has a flat top. I wish I’d gotten more with the flat top. I just like it, but it’s lost to the domed topper.

I ordered a coral pink 500 at to end my Amazon Prime free month of membership.

I hope it works @Catpaws  Does she get to choose the refills?

I finally decided to look up Sailor Moon. How fitting it’s based on a middle school girl. Has your daughter read that or seen the anime version?

that's pretty! i am not usually a pink fan but its a nice strong color

I don’t tend to get a lot of pink things either. The pen body came in white, black, a middle range of blue and bright orange. I gave a bright orange one to a friend for Christmas. Now, when it came to the Snoopy pens, I chose a pink one with Lucy petting Snoopy because it matched a button style pen I got in the mail from the Charles M. Schulz Museum. I try not to buy all the Peanuts versions because that would be too many multi pens since Zebra also makes them with Peanuts.

I do like having some place to talk about customizable multi pens. 😊

thanks @Misfit.  i ask her what she wanted. i don't know anything about sailor moon but she was excited about it so i thought why not? my daughter is college age. i dont think she has read the book. but we watched cowboy bebop together. i asked her about "my friend totoro". we might watch that.

i like being able to share about the customizable multi pens, too. i am going to put one together with different grades of pencil lead. i might be going overboard. ^_^

Not a Coleto, but I ordered another customizable multi pen, by Uni Style Fit. It’s pastel white, with 4 refill spots. Because of photos on Jet Pens, I picked Autumnal colors for the refills.  I got three by Uni Style Fit in brown black, mandarin orange, and violet. Because they didn’t have lime in 0.5, I ordered a Pentel version. I’ll just have to pull out the plastic part. I like Uni Style Fit refills the best. I should stop buying the pen bodies, and just get refills.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
