I am visiting Japan in a couple of weeks, so this trip report came very handy. Thank you.

 

I dont have a lot of time to browse pens shops, so wanted to pick your brain a little: if there were 1-2 shops that you would recommend for pens in the $500-1000 range, what would those be?

Yes, it's pretty cool being able to make your own notebook. I was tempted, but my pile of paper at home said otherwise.

Tokyo? Itoya, Maruzen, Kingdom-note. All three have a great selection of pens from which you can browse, test and buy.

I've been tempted to purchase pens with tortoise shell and ivory barrels during several trips to Japan. Not only pens but other artifacts like combs, pipes, and boxes. There is the legality that makes resale difficult. More importantly, is the moral issue. Do I need something from a truly endangered species? The answer is no. It is not necessary for any reason other than vanity.

you making me miss tokyo now. there are so many pen shops i have yet to visit there. i have only been to Itoya and Maruzen. would love to check out more pen shops there.

How is it that I just now found your thread? Have no idea, but found it I have. Great looking pens there! I envy you the Mitsukoshi ink. Still trying to get caught up after my trip, which caused me to miss these pen shows, and getting ready for new jobs starting in a couple of weeks, but need to get back in touch.

 

Looks like you had a fruitful trip.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
