Welcome aboard, from Charleston, SC. As you are a newbie, you might look at the Reference Pages on a website called Richard's Pens: it has a wealth of info about the basics of fountain pens, their use and care, and it will help you avoid making some mistakes. A couple of other websites with useful information for newbies include PenChalet, Jetpens and the Goulet Pen Company. Goulet has made quite a few videos available on their website and on YouTube, which are helpful with some procedures related to FP use. There is a series of posts here, called A Newbies Guide to Inks, which is worth reviewing (you’ll find it as the first pinned topic under the Inky Thoughts Subforum). Bear in mind that how your writing appears on the page is a complex interplay of pen, paper, nib, ink, and handwriting, so be patient as you experiment with these variables. Enjoy, and good luck.

Thank you, Mike. I appreciate the tips and other helpful information. I'm going about this slowly and surely as I don't want it to be a source of stress or something that I'd lose interest in quickly. Luckily, there are a lot of educational videos and blogs out there from avid fountain pen users and collectors. And yes, Goulet's videos have been very helpful to prepare me. I think I watched a lot of FP-related videos before I actually bought my first modern FP. That's not including the Parker 51 research I've done here and some other sites to take care of my grandfather's heirloom. I also realized that it's important to be part of the FP user community because there will be people who have been through some things in their FP experiences that could help a newbie like me. Plus, it's fun to just talk pens and share in the joy of using FPs. Hence, my registering on this site. :) Thanks again.

Such is the case with many of our members. Writing by hand requires a conscious effort, but can be developed into a habit,

that pleases people at both ends of the fountain pen. I am told that writing by hand engages a separate area of the brain

than using a keyboard. It certainly engages a different part of people, who receive the very personal messages.

 

Write with joy.

I agree wholeheartedly about putting in a conscious effort with writing by hand. I found that I've become more deliberate and mindful when I write with fountain pens. It is quite a different experience much like when you are making something by hand. It's an enjoyable activity. Thank you for the kind welcome.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
