I'm Rabbit, and hail from the currently very chilly mountains of West Virginia. I've been using fountain pens for about 2.5 years now, though my collection is very small due to my habit of giving away pens to friends & family. I originally got into the hobby because I read somewhere that it caused less fatigue/pain for people that have trouble writing long sessions. I used to use all kinds of pens/pencils when I was younger to write with but since I developed a nasty case of fibromyalgia my enjoyment of it has been curbed.

Fountain pens have brought a measure of that joy back. Currently I have a Pilot Prera - F, Pilot Kakuno - EF, and a Visconti Rembrandt - EF Calligraphy Nib) on the way tomorrow or the day after. Previously I had a Lammy EF, several Kakunos and a TWSBI 580AL EF Pink edition from 2016. I just sold that last one to go to my Visconti. I am hoping I do well with it, as I'm aware they are kind of hit or miss.

As far as inks go, I'm a fan of the Pilot inks and have a few samples of various types, my 2nd favorite is Noodler's Kiowa Pecan but my batch tends to run dry and that doesn't work so well with F/EF Japanese nibs! My absolute favorite in though is Pilot's Ajisai. It's a delicate shade that reminds me of the beautiful hydrangeas in Busan during the rainy weather.

I'm starting to want to branch out to different types of nibs, and working on my penmanship. FPN is a place I've lurked for a while, but I just couldn't resist joining in any more since I have a feeling my collection is going to start growing.

^^; Time to wrap things up as I'm on the shy side and feel awkward enough with my silly ramblings.

Welcome. Ballpoints do take a crazy amount of pressure, don't they? Almost more engraving than writing.

Welcome. Another way to reduce hand strain when writing is by using a pen with a wider grip. One of the widest inexpensive pens you can find is the Jinhao 159 (a knockoff of the Montblanc 149) which has a 12mm grip. By comparison, typical fountain pens have 9-10mm grips, and the Pilot Metropolitan's is a svelte 8.4mm.

You can buy it shipped from amazon or ebay for under $5, it takes standard cartridges or converters (it comes with a cheaply-made converter), and it takes standard #6 nibs should you want to replace the nib with a quality German-made one like Jowo (which sells online for $15). Made of brass, it's a big sucker, built like a tank, and comes in various colors.

Oh thank you for the suggestion! I've noticed I get cramped up with my Prera very quickly. My kakuno is much easier, as it is meant to be, to write with for longer sessions.

Corona, they sure are. I like gel pens if I'm going to use another writing instrument that isn't my fountain pens. I always enjoyed seeing the impressions made by writing in my hobonichi over time.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Haha, I am a bit messy because I'm distracted by my new love affair with this pen! After hearing horror stories of Visconti quality control, I was quite worried. I am happy to say that it's fantastic though! My handwriting even looks better with it than my previous pens. Though it will take some time to get used to its quirks.

Not that I would ever cast aside my Pilots, but oh dear. I finally get it.
