Hi From Connecticut

Hi all. I'm just getting into fountain pens, though I've always had a latent interest in them. The interest got re-kindled, crazily enough, after the sudden passing of my mother last December. Like many people her age, she kept everything she ever owned and I found tons of letters between her and my grandparents, my grandmother's journal, even a letter from my great grandfather to a great uncle, most written with a fountain pen. Being able to read those letters was like travelling back in time (in a way) that I don't believe carries over in the age of social media and clickbait. Because of this, and some prodding from a business associate, I got into this hobby with some earnestness.

I already had a few fountain pens, based on a liking without any real understanding: a Pilot Metro, a Schrade "tactical" pen, and a small Montblanc that I purchased when I got my first serious office job because ~~business~~.

The Montblanc writes well, but it is too small for my hands for any extended sessions. For $20, the Pilot Metro is a great pen and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. The Schrade I use less, mostly because it only takes cartridges. But it is smooth. As with anything I get into, I read (and now watch Youtube) voraciously on a subject, learning as much as I can. I saw some really good reviews on this site and decided to register, introduce myself, etc.

Later this week, I'm going to be visiting the Fountain Pen Hospital to try out a bunch of pens, and hopefully leave with one.

Off-topic, I got a warning for trying to post a link to my imgur account. Is Imgur not allowed here?

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Welcome aboard, from Charleston, SC. I’m not sure about the Imgur issue. As you are a newbie, you might look at the Reference Pages on a website called Richard's Pens: it has a wealth of info about the basics of fountain pens, their use and care, and it will help you avoid making some mistakes. A couple of other websites with useful information for newbies include PenChalet, Jetpens and the Goulet Pen Company. Goulet has made quite a few videos available on their website and on YouTube, which are helpful with some procedures related to FP use. There is a series of posts here, called A Newbies Guide to Inks, which is worth reviewing (you’ll find it as the first pinned topic under the Inky Thoughts Subforum). Bear in mind that how your writing appears on the page is a complex interplay of pen, paper, nib, ink, and handwriting, so be patient as you experiment with these variables. Enjoy, and good luck.

Mike

Thanks all for the kind welcome. It's awesome to see people around the world sharing the same interests. Also, thank you to Mr. Hunter for the newbie ink reference.

Welcome !

I once bought an old "writing slope" (learned that term here) full of letters from 1920 - 1930.

Old letters are like social media and time travel. Did any of the heirloom fountain pens survive ?

My mother also passed last January. My brothers and I have countless great memories to keep her with us. " To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die."

Write with joy.

Welcome from Ohio!

They place limits on your account until you have a few posts so that they can better understand that you are for real and not a spammer or similar I suppose. I was not able to add a photo to my profile until I had a certain number of posts (50 maybe....) so it is probably the same for posting a link using imgur. So, I would try again as you increase levels by posting more.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
