Intro Of A Newbie

Good Afternoon!

I am Lisa, aka Li. I had fountain pens when I was at school, but they were mainly Parker Vectors.

I have been collecting about a year now and the first pen to start this obsession off was the Lamy Safari Dark Lilac SE.

I now have 50+ fountain pens ranging from starter pens to next level ones, including brands such as Jinhao, Wing Sung, Pilot, TWSBI, Lamy, Parker, Sailor and Visconti.

My newest arrival is the Retro 51 Tornado Zodiac, and on its way is a Sailor Professional Gear Purple Cosmos.

I'm also a Bullet Journalist, which is how I got back into fountain pens.

Tell me, what is your favourite pen in your collection?

Welcome to our little corner of the universe from a pen user in San Diego. My favorite pen is a Pelikan 400 tortoise with an OBB nib from my birth year--- and I'm old!!

Welcome home Li. Pull up a stump and set a spell. Today it is a Danitrio Takumi size Chinkin based on the haiku 山の鳥 来てさわぎゐる 桜かな or "Yama no tori kite sawagi wiru sakura ka na" (The mountain bird arrived and disturbed the cherry blossom).

Welcome to FPN..

Jar, that is an amazing Pen.

I liked the Pilot Metropolitan Pen with an F nib, but, then I tried a Lamy with an XF nib; I really like this pen and it is my current favorite. I ordered a Pilot 74 with a Fine nib, but it was delivered with a Medium, so I am sending that back; really good price on that pen.

I have a couple of Eversharp and I have been kind of liking their stiff nibs because they put down a fine line so I can write smaller, but, they are a bit scratchy.

Hello Li and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

Favourite pen? My Conway Stewart Churchill Poinsettia with a medium-stub nib.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
