My First Montblanc (A 146 With A Very Broad Nib)

Hello everyone,

I purchased my first new-to-me Montblanc and I love it. I am guessing it is from the 90s. It is the larger size 146 with the striped ink window. It has a two tone 14k nib and it is amazing. I was looking for an oblique nib but I grew impatient (as I sometimes do) with the search for a reasonably priced oblique 146. This pen was listed as a fine but this pen showed up to my door and certainly was not a fine. It was exactly what I was looking for though. It seems to be some sort of oblique nib (B? BB?). Maybe some of the experts here will know. It has the serial number and Germany on the clip band. It also has brass threads on the piston. It has micro scratches but I have a lot of vintage pens and I do not bind a little honest wear, especially for what I paid for this 146. I love the size. It is the biggest pen I own so far and I love the comfort of the larger section.

I love obliques. I am a left hand over-writer and the angle of the grind for most obliques feels very natural to me. Here is my 146 with some other oblique nib pens that are in my rotation. The Esterbrook has the relief broad (2314B. I wrote OBB for the MB because that is what I assumed it is based on the shear width of the line. Also, please forgive the awful handwriting.

If anyone has ideas on what nib the MB has on it, I'd love to hear it.

Congratulations, it's a beauty!

My guess is a BB. Lucky you!

A 146 is still one of the best pens out there, in my humble opinion. Ticks all the boxes.

Enjoy.

Thank you CS388,

I really like it. Not having used a broad MB nib before, I wasn't sure if it was oblique or not. This is not captured very well in my photos, but there seems to be a slight angle on the nib. This might be all in my mind though. Either way, the nib is very stub-like and sensitive to the angle I write at. However, it seems to work well at an angle that is natural to my writing style.

Thank you again for your reply,

Alex

I am looking at pic No. 2- do I see a gold(plated) ring near feeder, or it's just a shadow of unpolished "collar"?

I have three 146s, none of them have goldplated ring there?

You are correct, it is not a gold plated ring. Its just my desk lighting playing tricks with the mat plastic ring at the end of the barrel.

Beautiful BB!

Thank you ghost plane. Double broad seems to be the consensus. It is very broad. I love it!

Yup BB for sure. Glad you started with a winner for a 146. Next comes the hunt for an OBB. :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
