Omas Italia'90 Piston Knob Repair?

Recommended Posts

I bought a 2nd-hand Omas Italia'90 for its delightful nib and because I'd heard so many wonderful things about the brand. A few weeks later this happened:

I'm not sure how to disassemble it any more.

I've heard Omas frequently have delicate parts, so I'm afraid to use too much force on anything. I wouldn't be the saddest if all I recover is the nib, but it's a nice pen despite its lacking an ink window -- I'd like to resuscitate it if I can.

Anyone have suggestions?

I couldn't find a disassembly guide searching online, but I think maybe this is a special-edition of a different model that might have more resources if I knew what it was.

I bet Francis (fountainbel) would know, and probably have the means to repair this pen stronger than it's ever been. I'd let him chime in though. I've seen a good number of his miracles, and they are certainly mechanical miracles that he works.

It worked! Rotating that outer green ring does rotate the black piston-shaft.

So I'll wait a bit to see if Francis (fountainbel) chimes in. But right now, I'm thinking I'll drill 2-3 tiny holes into each broken section & glue the green parts together careful to avoid touching the black piston-rod -- this time with pins for extra strength when I rotate it. The shear is within a millimeter of a trim-ring, so if I glue it well I think it'll be hardly visible :)

Any suggestion for a glue? I'm guessing an epoxy, maybe super-glue.

Your idea of using/installing two small - 1mm diameter? - axial pins connecting the 2 broken parts is surely a good one.

However both parts should be perfectly radially & axially aligned when drilling the holes.

So drilling has to be done while the parts are assembled and perfectly centered by putting a perfect fitting pin in the central bore.

After removal of the bleu glue you can use 2 components epoxy glue and clamp the parts axially- with the centering pin installed - under light pretension for an hour to get a perfect bound.

Wishing you succes !

Francis

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
