Going Pelikan Only

Thank you!

Best laid plans and all that . . . this thread has sent me down a vintage Pelikan rabbit hole, so who knows where this journey will lead.

You've chosen an exciting rabbit hole. I love my vintage Pelikans. The nibs are exquisite. They are built to last. There are many available. I love my new ones, too. But, I usually have them modified by a nibmeister to gain more writing character. The older ones are blessed with character upon receipt. I look forward to hearing, and seeing your collection as it matures.

The 50-65 era is a stubbed semi-flex.

A fine poster said, @ "Stub and CI are 100% line variation, the stubbed semi-flex nibs are line variation on demand."

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

That's a great collection to start ! I'd like to do that aswell, but I only have one...a M600 green striped. I plan to increase them though and my next buy will be the M120 Iconic Blue special Edition, while I'm also looking to locate an "affordable" F nib, Burnt Orange !

I like variety too much to specialize in one brand, but if I were to go all anything, it would certainly be the piston-filling bird.

Wow... don't tell me there is another row of vintage Pelikans below the first one? :D I need to get one of those metal plaques... lovely. :)

You have quire a good eye. Here is the other half of that case. The tin advertising poster is strategically placed where I can admire it every day.

Wow! What a fantastic collection you have there, mrp100!

Just one of those rows would make anyone drool over it. Both? Simply wonderful!

I was putting some of my pens away to take to the bank and thought this image of some our (my wife and I) birds nesting would be appropriate for this thread (there are a few intruders there...)

So, I totally understand going "all Pelikan"!

Ooooooo.... a Chronoswiss (by Pelikan) pen!

chiefly used to facilitate the infection of idiocy and promote intellectual crime.

Yup, the Chronoswiss is a sweet pen and a favorite of mine.

It does help that the nibs that came with it have a lot of character.

Now, if only I could get a Blue Ocean to make it company... :)

I'm considering parting with a Pelikan M800 I've had for about 8 years, which was inked once in its lifetime. Let me know if that's something you'd be interested in.

Pelikans seem to be creeping up in my collection. Partly because my mother bought me a few new ones for presents, but also because I lurk and lurk and lurk until I see bargains on eBay. They happen, but not that often, which is perhaps just as well. And they don't happen at all on 800s and 1000s, or 500s, unless someone knows better than me...

Going all-Palikan, though? No. Too much love for my Watermans, Parkers, Indian and Japanese pens.

Too many pens, too little time!

I've found eBay pretty uninspiring lately as well... but that's good, it saves me money for the new releases (and my Sweetie would add "and a new fence, and a patio cover, and new carpets")

I’ve snagged a couple of below-averagely priced Pelikans on eBay, especially a M900 Toledo I’m especially pleased with. I’ve found the best deals though through smaller independent fountain pen specialists, and friendly FPN members. And oh boy does the flock grow!

The only other fountain pens that have come close to snagging my attention are the Asia and Africa Aurora pens. But easily resisted: pretty but lacking, in my view, the elegance of these birds.

I too have other pens but my first love is still my Pelikan M600 which I bought from W. R. Bullen in Norwich in 1990. It is still in daily use ahead of some more exotic pens, of which I have quite a few.

So, well said. My same feeling about old/new Pelikans.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
