Caran D'ache Amazon Green Turned Blue?

My friend had a bottle of caran d'ache amazon, which he gave to me while he was moving away. When I tried the ink, I noticed that it turned completely blue. I don't know if someone replaced the ink in this bottle but don't remember it. I'm wondering if anyone heard of this particular ink turn blue from green somehow. Oxidation, or heat or humidity -- somehow...

Never heard of that. My two bottles of it are still absolutely green. It must have been somebody fooling around with a replacement of anything else. Oxidation, heat, freezing, humidity -- all of those parameters won't change its colour in the least.

Yeah, it looks like my friend might have mixed it up a little. It wasn't helpful that he didn't remember it and insisted he didn't do anything :D

I haven't heard of Amazon Green turning blue, but I've heard of both of the blues significantly changing colour.

Hi Chrissy,

Of what blues are you talking about ? In what way did they change color ?

Cheers

Hi Patrick! Mike here (not Chrissy).

Of all of the blue CdAs which I have....

  • old series = blue night, blue sky, caribbean sea
  • new series = hypnotic turquoise, magnetic blue, idyllic blue

... there haven't yet been any significant changes in their colours noticeable over the years (all kept in their boxes and out of any direct lighting).

I've heard of Blue Night and Blue Sky changing colour. Also Storm changes colour when it gets old too

My CDA oldies (all bought in 2008) have all retained the same colour till today, including their storm, too, which I hadn't forgotten, although it's more off from a "blue" than the "caribbean sea" is. The only thing I never did understand is that blue night and blue sky were/are so similar in colour. I mean, they could have differentiated the actual colour representations of these earth things a bit more. Oh well, the main thing is that they're no longer being manufactured. I really like them -- and still do --, though.

  • 4 months later...

My caribbean sea just turned green. The sample and original bottle both stored in cabinets/boxes. One day I dipped into the sample to compare it to another ink because I'm always searching for that color match and voila! the dip pen wrote in green. I blamed everything but the ink, all the way to blaming myself for putting amazon in the sample bottle. Then I got the original glass bottle out and it had turned green, also.

I was very sad! This was just recently.

I'm afraid to check the other colors of the earth for change.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
