Inky Thoughts And Choices From The La Pen Show

Recommended Posts

This year at the LA Pen show, I hosted one of the presentations. My assistants Errant Smudge and Aquitaine are seen here assisting me. Monteverde graciously donated ink.

The videos are really weird because they are taken with a 360 camera. So try and move the image around.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

BTW, the movies look better on youtube than on my computer.

Here the assistant speaks out ... and we were talking about this pen:

First time I try these 360° videos, too. Thank you for sharing from those of us on the other side of the pond!

The 360 is really crazy. This was our first time using the camera. It overheated - hence the short clips. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed.

Had to sign in just to say this is hilarious. I think this each and every morning when I see myself in the mirror while shaving. Other things I imagine simply aren't appropriate for a family friendly forum, though.

Hello Amber, nice to finally see you, even if it's unclearly and from a distance...

The sound though was not really capturing you... too bad. I can see you were enjoying giving the presentation/workshop...

Amber, I had so much fun as one of your audience assistants!

I have a GoPro camera I wish I had thought of bringing with me. It would have been ideal for recording the event. Maybe next year.

In our minds we are ALL taller, thinner and younger. Well, my height isn't too bad although I seem to have shrunk half an inch (I blame the discectomy for that). And I can probably pass for younger than I really am (the advantage of ash-tone dark blonde/light brown hair is that the grey just sort of blends in B)).

That seemed like a fun class (loved the comment about "crazy stupid inks") -- although the shaky 360° camera made me a little urpy, and I had to keep futzing with the volume....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
