Hello From The West Coast Of Scotland

Hi there

I enjoy using a fountain pen although it's getting harder at work with computers taking over and offices going paperless but I'm making a point now of using one for making notes wherever possible as my handwriting tends to be better with a fountain pen compared to a ball point.

I've a fairly random mix of pens, my favourite pen (because it was a gift from my wife) is a Cross Apogee Sable Herringbone and I've also got a Waterman Executive (stainless steel), my late Father's old (discoloured) Jade Green Parker Duofold Streamline (I think 1930s era - a very smooth writer), 3 Black Parker 45 CTs and a Black 45 Classic (all relics from my schooldays in the 70s), two Parker Falcon 50s (Flighter and Matte Brown) - I love the idea and looks of the integral nib, a Daniel Hechter and my latest acquisition, a 4th quarter in 1950 Parker "51" Aero-metric, Black with a Custom cap, which I got to match my Father's "51" ball point, and which writes beautifully.

I'm currently keeping my eye open for an early Parker 61 as I'm intrigued by the capillary filler.

I came across this site a few weeks ago and I'm now having great fun trawling through all the threads.

Best

James

Hello James and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Thanks for the welcome OCArt, jar, Chrissy, Henricum_Tropen, Thomas and Khan.

I like the Churchill quote in your signature, Henricum_Tropen. I hope the drought breaks soon, Cape Town is a lovely city, had my honeymoon there after getting married in Zim where I grew up, although I was born in Malawi.

Welcome, James !

Bless you and your father's Parker Duofold. Someone here has the address of the Parker Pen identification site. I have fun using it (leaving few items for your girlfriend).

Thanks for the welcome Northstar, PAKMAN, Sasha Royale and Wahl. It's good to be here.

Sasha - If you mean the Parker Pens Penography site, yes it's a mine of information on all the various versions and definitely great fun to look through.

Thanks for the welcome, Pen Nut, TurboPen and Mike.

Pen Nut, when I saw your safe door avatar it brought to my mind pictures of the early computer built at Manchester in 1948 by Alan Turing and others!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
