Unknown Parker 51 Nib

Recommended Posts

I just got the pet and im amazed by this nib, its very thin in construction and it puts out a very thin one as well, ive tried to compare it with some of my other pens but nothing came close to its level of fineness, then i tried to compare it with some of my gel pens and it wrote quite the same. It wrote with a 0.5-0.6 line. A possible accountant nib?

One of my Parker 51s which I had called Fine nibbed has a 0.5mm line.

A rough guide for me, on Parker 51s is 0.3 Ef, 0.5 F, 0.7 Medium, 0.9 Broad.

But there are differences for US and UK made 51s which tend to be a little broader.

Yes, 45 nibs tend to be wider.

I have a broad P45, that is a .9 width. Different types and combinations of ink and paper can also have a significant effect on line width also.

I have an x 45 and its really comparable to the fineness of the 51, true ink and paper can make a difference but ive inked both of them with the same ink, pelikan violet and 45 still writes comparably thicker than the 51

Thanks for replying, i have already viewed that thread and as it was stated there parker didnt mark their nibs on 51, so its a bit hard and confusing (unless it has the original sticker it had). None the less thanks for sharing your time with my inquiries :)

Thank you Chrissy for replying, you do make a good point, i did think that the tipping on my 51 was abit run down! Ill take it to a nib meister some time next month for a proper prognosis of its current state :)

I would concur that it's likely to be an EF, from the photos. I don't know enough about the more "exotic" nibs that might have been available for 51s (I have mostly Fs, but a couple of Ms, a couple of EFs, and a one English-made 51 Aerometric with what I think is an OB (certainly an OM) nib.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
