Papier Plume Bayou Nightfall

Papier Plume is s stationery shop situated in the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans. The company began its business in 2001 however the shop was opened in 2007. From what I see on google maps the shop looks quite nice.

Some time ago the company started to offer fountain pen inks. They're supposed to be hand poured and bottled right in the shop. The inks are water based and described as french inks (imported? anyone knows french private label maker?). At the moment the inks are available in 15 colors and are sold in three bottles: small (15 ml), medium (30 ml), big (50 ml):

Bayou Nightfall is an interesting ink with unique hue. It's somewhere between green, blue and green. The ink is moderately saturated and offers nice and consistent flow. The shading is quite strong and differences between text parts are easily visible even from finer nibs. The sample was sent to me by namrehsnoom - thanks!

Reminds me a bit of some (unidentified color name) ink that Monteverde gave out as swag at DCSS a few years ago.

Thanks for the review. I think I can pass on this one.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Sigh, this looks so much like my PP Oyster Grey... I often wonder if I got a mislabeled Bayou Nightfall, or maybe my bottle is from a batch that had extra blue-green added to the gray... I keep waiting for someone to post some side-by-side writing samples of both of those inks.

Hmm... this doesn't look like my PP Oyster Grey which is bluer and more silvery. It looks more like their Street Car Green which has that green plus brown. Wait, it also has a lot of grey in it too. I love it. Thanks for the nice review, Vis!

In a certain way, it's also a great example of an ink colour which is just not all that easy to describe. Tons of blues, greens, reds, browns, blacks are all much more easy to describe. IMO.

I picked up a bottle of this at the shop and was told that Oyster Grey is one of the components of it, which explains the cyan around the edges of the paper towel test. Side by side, the density of the Bayou Nightfall seems a littler lower though.

While Oyster Grey looks almost neutral at first glance, Bayou Nightfall leans more towards an obvious green.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
