Yeah. I don't think there's much you can learn by simply reading forums because it's all dependent on the paper you use, the pens you use, how you write and what you're trying to achieve. If I've learned nothing else in the short time I've been on this forum, it's how subjective this all is. That doesn't mean you ignore other people's opinions, after all, they've got good reasons for giving them and that's where these forums are invaluable, but the final answer must always be filtered through you're own experiences.

Which is GREAT! It means you HAVE to buy more pens and more ink and do more experimentation in the pursuit of some probably illogical goal :D

By the way, what kind collection of pens do you hold in your arsenal? Any favorites? :)

I'm a rank beginner. I've got a Sheaffer No Nonsense that I bought back in the eighties and is now serving me again. A Dasi Flex(somethingorother) - Aussie pen that I bought in the nineties, and is now serving me again.

My two new pens are a Pilot Prera and a Pilot Vanishing Point.

At the moment, the VP is my favourite but that's because I've only had it two days and it's all new and shiny :D

What about you?

Fantastic, you're using your trusty old friends! it's good to use the pens you already have. Maybe later you may want to buy something new to try a different pen down the road. Having said that, the fun is in using a fountain pen, if it works, why replace it!

In my case I wanted to buy something inexpensive, hence the Parker Frontier came on board two years ago, followed by the Lamy Safari. The other two pens followed later. As you mentioned in your last post to me, trying out different inks would be nice. But with any hobby, one can get carried away! Surprisingly, my Lamy Safari seems to get used most often. The nib is very smooth, and just wet enough for me - it's spot on.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
