Deer Copper Fountain Pens From Taiwan

I met a guy today who has started making his own fountain pens. He's been in the hobby for a while and has just recently started a very small-scale production. He uses deer antler for the barrel and copper for the section--hence the name of his pen, Deer Copper. The first generation of his pens looked a little rough around the edges, but the new ones have a very polished look. I met him in a coffee shop, so there was no ruler nearby to measure the size. All I can say is that they are wider and longer than my Pilot Metropolitan. However, because it was a cafe, there was a scale, and the pens seem to come in around 38-39g. He uses Schmidt nibs, but everything else is made in Taiwan. I'm not sure where the antlers are imported from, though. He doesn't have a website, just a Facebook page.

Oops. I wasn't aware of this subforum or where a thread like this should go. It probably belongs here because he isn't a large manufacturer and won't be selling these in stationery stores around the world. It's more craft and personal interest than it is a business.

Their unfortunate choice of name reflects their materials. Knowing a little bit about Chinese, I think I know what they did. They chose a name that probably sounded good in Chinese (鹿銅; lu tong), then just translated those characters into English. At the very least, they should have reversed the order for their English name and called it Copper Deer.

The pens look nice aesthetically, smooth pure lines and quite a luxurious look. nice work.

Personally I would probably feel uncomfortable holding a pen made of that material; and would prefer a 'normal' wood version.

Did you try or hold the pen? How do you think the copper section will age (patina)?

The pen writes well. It's a fairly smooth feel, as you'd expect. I'm not sure about patina, but the copper was quite dark and I imagine it's coated with something to protect it.

That's a beautiful pen. I have recently acquired a scrimshaw pen from Mr. Ryan Krusac and have quickly fallen in love with antler pens.

I would love to see this antler pen paired with a copper section that could patina with use, similar to the Karas Kustoms and Namisu; but I wonder if there could be any reactions between unfinished copper and antler (thinking oxidizing copper section inside and inky cap). I also like the idea of having more nib options if the section accepted Bock/Jowo nibs.

Very lovely, nevertheless! I hope your friend comes up with more beautiful pens.

I had an opportunity to write with one of these yesterday. My initial impression was that the grip was too narrow and the pen was too heavy. But, inked up and held in the writing position, it was quite comfortable to hold and well balanced. It was also my first time using Mont Blanc Royal Blue, which behaved well.

D'oh. The previous post should say "picture", but I can't figure out how to edit it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
