Extra Fine Nib

Help !

So many different brands and models.

Where do I start

My Extra Fine Wing Sung 3003 has developed some intermittent feed issues. Have given it a though clean a couple of times without any success.

Halfway through a drawing is not the time to be coping with a drying out or extra wet inkflow.

Rather than fussing too much over a 99penny pen I am thinking about a more reliable pen

Reading through a few of the threads I am thinking a Chinese or Japanese nib for line fineness. Simple eye dropper or cartridge would be perfect as I always fill with syringe.

If there is a pen with finer nib than my W/S this would be perfect. Budget is tight - certainly below 100 Euro and ideally much less.

Fine line and constant ink flow are main need.

Shape and colour are unimportant.

I have an extra-fine Pilot desk pen that creates a very consistent, extremely fine line. It has a sturdy cartridge that I fill with a syringe. I don't keep it in a holder; I just keep it capped when not in use.

At least in the United states, these pens cost the equivalent of 10 Euro.

Ah yes, I have read about pilot penmanship. I was wondering if there was something even finer than Pilot out there.

I often use rotring technical pens but have left them back in UK at friends house. They are away for winter also.

The only thing I know of that's finer than a Japanese EF would be a UEF (for example). The only one generally available, that I know of, is the Platinum 3776 Century (for example, see here: https://www.gouletpens.com/search/?facetValueFilter=Tenant~Nib_Size%3Aultra_extra_fine&query=3776).

You can perhaps get those cheaper elsewhere, but Goulet has the specs, the nib nook for writing comparisons, and is a reliable retailer.

Alternately, the Platinum desk pen EF nib might be slightly finer than a Pilot EF (I'm not sure - but the nib nook tool makes it seem like the Platinum desk pen EF might be just as fine as the 3776 UEF - or close).

There's always a G nib, which you could put into any pen that takes a #6 nib. These are super extra fine.

Certainly you could get custom grinds that are finer, but that will generally cost you more.

Hi Liz

Thanks for the information. . Sounds an interesting fix as I’ve a jinhao that has a 6 size of nib. Just found a couple of G nibs in art bag. I’ll pop one in the Jinhao.

There are videos on how to do it - you may want to change the nib so that the curve is not as sharp, and note that you need to line up the slits in the side of the nib with notches in the feed - the videos show these things. Just search YouTube for Jinhao and G nib.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
