Hi guys,

My name is Dammika I'm originally from Sri Lanka currently working in Doha,Qatar, I'm very new to Fountain pens in fact since I last used them in school over 25 years ago and since then I only used one last month.

Loved the experience so much I've been reading as much as I can, and been out looking for vintage pens. Also bought my first Fountain pen a Hugo Boss Advance, I know it's not much but was the only things available here.

I've used parkers at school at some point but cant recall the models.

All advice are welcome, Please feel free to send any resources books, websites etc..c as recommendations.

Thanks

Hello from the USA. I enjoy Ceylon tea.

There are some threads here on vintage pens, and lots of people willing to help. I found that help while looking into vintage Esterbrooks.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Where abouts in the UK I am from Sunderland. If you ever get the chance to visit Sri-Lanka someone is bound to take you to a tea plantation where you will be treated to a taste that you will never forget and your bound to buy a Tin of TEA and linger awhile 13 times Visitor. Trust me, Oneill

Welcome aboard, from Charleston, SC. As you are a newbie, you might look at the Reference Pages on a website called Richard's Pens: it has a wealth of info about the basics of fountain pens, their use and care, and it will help you avoid making some mistakes. A couple of other websites with useful information for newbies include PenChalet, Jetpens and the Goulet Pen Company. Goulet has made quite a few videos available on their website and on YouTube, which are helpful with some procedures related to FP use. There is a series of posts here, called A Newbies Guide to Inks, which is worth reviewing (you’ll find it as the first pinned topic under the Inky Thoughts Subforum). Bear in mind that how your writing appears on the page is a complex interplay of pen, paper, nib, ink, and handwriting, so be patient as you experiment with these variables. Enjoy, and good luck.

Mike

Welcome!

I know it's not a new idea or anything but every once in a while I realize how crazy awesome the internet is --with something as simple as this website -- people from all over the world can access information and get help from people all over the place and talk about... pens of all things. How cool is that.

Thank you so very much for your kind words, all of you.

Probably due to the settings on this site I never received notice when these wonderful greeting were posted. I just came by and was surprised by all these welcomes. A truly wonderful surprise indeed.

To all of you Gentlemen visiting Sri Lanka in the future, The least I could do is maybe offer to find you some good tea at a bargain price.

So silver tip tea, the finest probably in the world in my humble opinion, rare and expensive with many supposed benefits to health, I can't say if they are true or not but what I can say is that they are the least processed tea.

Only the top most bud leaf is plucked for this tea and dried over the sun naturally, unlike normal tea which are made out of more mature leaves down the tree which are broken, grounded and heated over and over artificially. The more this is done the darker and stronger the taste but poorer the quality, that is a little known well guarded fact. Many don't know this and prefer a strong cup of tea.

Silver Tip off the shelf sells for about US $30 for 100grams ($300 for 1kg) commercially, which I believe is what most tourist buy. That is, if they even know what silver tip tea is.

So if any of you gentlemen ever visit Sri Lanka I can find this for you at US $90 for 1kg for the very best silver tip, and/or US$50 per 1kg of medium quality silver tips tea.

Again this is not a commercial venture, just a goodwill gesture. let me know in advance so I can keep it ready. and I can't get commercial quantities this is for personal consumption not for commercial use please.

Thank you again for your wonderful greetings, thank you all.

Rgds

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
