Recommended Posts

Hello,

Does anybody have experience with a montblanc OF nib? I do not find a lot about it, but have the occasion to buy one for my MB 220.

Many Tx

If it is from the same era, it will be semi-flex...perhaps maxi.

It will be 1/2 a width narrower than modern....and the same 'width' in narrowness as your 220.

I don't have a 220...lost a bid on one.It was semi-flex...I tested it before the live auction....that's the one that looks and feels like a Lamy 2000?

I have a semi-flex 234 1/2 Deluxe ('52-54 only...Meisterstuck clip and single band, vs 2 for the regular) OB. A rolled gold 742 with a nib between semi&maxi....my only in between nib; with 26 semi-flex and 16 maxi-semi-flex....most clump together in each's set.

My medium large '50's 146....much better balance than the large 146, has a maxi-semi-flex nib.

Any Oblique must be held canted.

Check and see if your oblique has a 15 degree grind or a rare 30 degree grind.

To get the nib canted to the paper ....later you won't need this....line up the clip so it is pointed half way between the slit and the shoulder. Grip the pen in air, Set to paper and write.....No need to twist hands arms or hang from the chandelier.

That is a big problem....folks thinking they must make the nib do something....no, just let it do what it was designed for.

If a 30 Degree grind align the clip with the outside right edge of the nib...grip in air put to paper and write.

Well, one time I forgot a pen was an oblique....and was reaching for the micro-mesh....but it was an OM that I forgot to cant. OB is more forgiving, only a tad scratchy if held straight. OM &OF must be placed canted on the paper.

If you do a search on posts by Tom Kellie, he recently resurrected posts on this nib and linked to multiple older posts on the topic with pictures. I’m on a mobile device at the moment, so can’t link for you.

If you happen to buy an OF nib, I would love to see the sample and compare with Toms writing sample to assess for variation.

Many thanks,

Steve

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
