I just looked at nibs.com/ classic pens and found the tiny plastic steel nibbed Kaweco sport for about 180 USD! Whats that extra $150 for? Any Ideas?

If you mean the Kaweco Sport pens for $178, then they come equipped with a 14ct gold nib not a regular steel one. So that's why they cost more than a Sport with a steel nib. :)

Hmhm, sure, seems so. But not saying that on headliner of pens where the steel nib is the basic option... well, they get threads like this.

Kaweco's pens are relatively inexpensive, but their gold nibs are extortionately priced. Their 14k B nibs are old style, not ball-tipped; I'd love one, but refuse to pay that much.

The retail cost for a 14K or an 18K nib is often 60% or more of the price of the pen. Even the steel nib Kawecos like the brass Sport or Dia go for $100. Under $200 for one with a gold nib isn't all that bad. Gold as I write this is $1333/ Troy oz. Add the price of making the nib and tipping with a platinum alloy the price of the gold and it adds up quickly.

The Nibsmith sells kaweco steel nibs for 14 dollars and tunes and smooths for $15. So that's $30 for a steel nib--or 50 with a grind.

 

Having just bought 3 kaweco nibs in a row (black nibs FYI at $40 a pop) for my AC carbon sport without a single one working properly (and ruined 2 so far trying to "fix" them myself), I'm about to give up and buy a nib tuned by nibs.com or Dan Smith. The way I see it is, if I'm going to pay for an adjusted nib I may as well get a gold one. It's worth it for me as I love the AC sport. If only the nib worked well.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..
