I'm a resident in the Nor Cal area.

I got into pens through a professor from seminary. I started off with an old school pen (of the transparent Schaeffer variety) with the cartridges.

I also discovered my father had a Parker fountain pen as well and I currently have that as well. Which probably needs some servicing...

It was about 10 years ago I purchased my own Parker 51 from my professor. It was black and had a gold filled cap dated from 1947 with the original nib.

That last item is what brought me here. Unfortunately, I had left my beloved pen in my laptop bag when some unruly individual who probably belonged to one of the theft rings in Northern California proceeded to break the glass in my passenger side rear window, pull my rear seats down, and take said bag... which included my pen. This happened Dec. 13th, 2017... :(

Now I'm here to get some help looking for a replacement.

I originally purchased the pen at $65 and I'm looking to shop on eBay for the next one. If there are any tips and suggestions on the subject I'd appreciate it. I'm newb when it comes to looking at eBay for these pens. That being said, I know enough to take a good look at the number of reviews people have and how close they are to 100% positive. What I don't know is where my price ceiling should be for a comparable pen.

Any tips???

It would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to FPN!! Glad to have you as a member!!

For a plain black 51 with lustaloy cap (restored) I would think $75 to $125 would be about right.

Welcome. You will find great information here.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Welcome !

Do you still have the old Sheaffer cartridge pen ? Many of started with those, and continue to hold some affection. I have several in my collection. Those that survive the decades are still good writers. Did you say which fountain is from your father ? I love heirloom fountain pens. My father's Parker 51 is priceless to me.

I still have my Sheaffer and am using it. It's holding up pretty well.

I am not familiar with the model of Parker my father gave me. It does bear a strong resemblance to the 75 in an all gold look. That guy needs servicing.

I will endeavor to look for a 51 though. I loved that pen, and it was a 1947 pen too.

I just purchased a few Lamy's since they had a 3 for the price of 1 sale last week for the LX. I'm probably going to give one to one of my nieces and keep the others. Looking forward to see how this guy writes...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
