Agreed. But worth the risk as these don't come around often. I'm interested in hearing from the board which restorers would be the best for this challenge.

If it was mine I'd send it to The Write Pen (Danny Fudge)

Not a repair that everyone does. Fewer in the group that do advanced celluloid repair. Fewer still would take this on.

Would like to see some close up pictures.

woof! that's a rare one. might be a job for the likes of ron zorn. it's a "candystripe" vacumatic, not that easy to find, and when found typically shows shrinkage or caramelization right under the clip ring. this one's broken in that part and will probably need to be solvent-welded (if possible--ron would know).

i was lucky to find one on ebay (ireland) some years ago, but it needed a lot of work which i did myself (thankfully no cracks, just missing parts). interestingly, this variant had an ebonite section and blind cap.

I had been wondering if the pen in question was a one of the candy stripes. I don't think I've ever actually seen one in the wild, so the photo of it was intriguing....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Canadian or British Vacumatic?

If British it would be confirmation that Valentine's did produce batches of pens for Parker's long before the take over.

So the pen arrived late yesterday. Pictures to follow but its in tough shape. I am corresponding with a couple of well known restorers as at best we will need to graft a piece on the cap. More to come.

keep us posted. that's its weak spot, just below the clip ring. mine has a bit of shrinkage, but i've seen others totally caramelized or crumbled.

Work has been in the way of getting back on here. After consulting with 4 experts, the candy stripe cap is a write off. Too much celluloid rot on this one to try to fix. Will be sending off to clean the barrel which is in great shape and taking the hardware off which is pristine.

So I won another auction. Posting one pic...this one is in much better condition and came from the daughter of the original owner who found the pen in an old cigar box...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
