Parker Vacumatic Repair (Uk)

I got given a Parker Vacumatic from my grandmother. I think it must be from around 1942 to 1946?

Anyway, I think that it's a bit beyond me to repair it and get it working again so I was going to send it to somewhere in the UK for repair.

The nib is bent - I dipped it to see how it wrote and it does work and gives a thin / fine line.

The nib says 'PARKER - 14K - ENGLAND - 10 4' and there is an 'A' printed under the feed.

The filling mech needs repairing/renewing.

The clip is bent and needs fixing.

Apart from that it's just cosmetic things like cleaning the gold trim. Can you polish the celluloid? It has chew marks on the tail cap but I don't mind that as it reminds me of my grandmother.

Any advice on where to send it too and likely cost?

I'm new to all of this and was wondering if the repair place would also repair the nib or does one get a new nib?

Thanks,

Ed

Please can I suggest that you type "UK fountain pen repairs" into your Google search box and several possibilities will come up.

I have personally used Battersea Pen Home and Peter Twydle with excellent results.

Or eckiethump, he is a member here.

Thank you for the mention Hari, these pens are "bread and butter", I would enjoy restoring this one, due to the family connection.

I emailed Peter Twydle in early Feb and he replied saying that he could fix it.

So I sent this pen off on the 9th Feb and emailed him to say that he would receive it soon & could he confirm receipt.

No reply so I waited then emailed again on the 23rd Feb - no reply...

Does he normally take a while to get round to fixing things or is something up?

Or am I being impatient!

I guess he has something going on in his life...?

OK... I got it back in May and filled it once - used it and then when I came to fill it again ... it doesn't fill.

I mothballed it until now as I was so annoyed.

I suppose I should have got in touch with Peter but to be honest it was a bit of a long winded process the first time round.

Anyway - any suggestions? Is it likely to be something that I can fix?

Check to see if the vac diaphragm has perished.

Have some examples that I've bought supposedly with fresh diaphragms, but before long they too have perished before I've gone around to inking them.

the repairer might have a warranty. Why not contact them? Pens can develop problems, hence a warranty.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
