Greetings From A Newbie!

Greetings Everyone!,

This has been my first time to have interest about Fountain pens. Especially to understand that there is such variety of them.

It started when I was writing on my journal. While writing, I was pleased and amused. I'm starting to think that maybe I could learn new things and make it a hobby.

So, having the LAMY Safari as my first fountain pen. I am delighted to have it and learn with it :).

But I will try out with other brands that suits my preference as well.

So far, I am trying to find techniques to improve my cursive, then I might find fancy fonts just for fun reference.

It was awkward because I cannot find a person or group that I cannot relate about fountain pens. That's why, I am here to talk about it and to improve.

Hope to learn and have fun with you, everyone :D.

-Owen

Welcome and I hope you enjoy your time here!

<i>Many boys will bring you flowers. But someday you'll meet a boy who will learn your favourite flower, your favourite song, your favourite sweet. And even if he is too poor to give you any of them, it won't matter because he will have taken the time to know you as no one else does. Only that boy earns your heart-Leigh Bardugo

Greetings from Pittsburgh! :W2FPN:

I also found my way here from journaling, after leaving the then current journal and a Parker Vector at my in-laws' house in Connecticut a few years ago. I had only been using a fountain for that, but found that I didn't get the same vibe going back to a ballpoint. In the search for finding another Vector online (until I got that one back) I eventually found my way here -- and the rest was sort of history....

Safaris are good starter pens. I have one of the Dark Lilac LE pens that they came out with a couple of years ago, and I like it a lot. What ink(s) are you using with it?

I generally suggest that new people click on the "View New Content" button at the top of page, in order to get manageable chunks of threads (you can adjust how much at any given log-in by the sidebar on the main forum pages). And to maybe have a look at the pinned Index to the Ink Reviews Forum. But I should also warn you that we are shameless enablers here -- we will be happy to help you spend your discretionary funds on pens, inks, paper, repair tools, ephemera, pen shows....

I heard good reviews about Parker Vector. Maybe I can try or buy it once I get used to my Safari.

Ink that I used for now is the Lamy Cartridges. To be honest, there is no any shop for other brand fountain pen inks in my country. I only have the DOLLAR and CAMEL ink brand which I can try it soon. Hopefully, the results will be flawless, and Thank you for telling me about the "View New Content" button. I may start touring around this forum.

Welcome aboard, from Charleston, SC. As you are a newbie, you might look at the Reference Pages on a website called Richard's Pens: it has a wealth of info about the basics of fountain pens, their use and care, and it will help you avoid making some mistakes. A couple of other websites with useful information for newbies include PenChalet, Jetpens and the Goulet Pen Company. Goulet has made quite a few videos available on their website and on YouTube, which are helpful with some procedures related to FP use. There is a series of posts here, called A Newbies Guide to Inks, which is worth reviewing (you’ll find it as the first pinned topic under the Inky Thoughts Subforum). Bear in mind that how your writing appears on the page is a complex interplay of pen, paper, nib, ink, and handwriting, so be patient as you experiment with these variables. Enjoy, and good luck.

Welcome, Owen !

Practice ! Find and invent reasons to practice writing.

There are a surprising number of fp enthusiasts about. They tend to be cordial and generous.

However, they cannot find you,, if they do not know your location,. Where are you ?

Zum Augenblicke dürft ich sagen:
Verweile doch, du bist so schön !

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
