Need A Somewhat Better Behaved Version Of Bsb. Pr Supershow Blue? Liberty's Elysium?

I love BSB, but hate the cleanup. I'd like to get another retina-searing blue to have for grabbing attention, and think these two might fit. Any other ideas for an eyeball searer? I looked through the retina-searing ink thread, and these two leapt out at me.

There isn't one. I use BSB until I'm sick of it and return a few months later.

Supershow blues and Penman Sapphire are favourites along with other blue-greenish flavours.

Have you considered Diamine Majestic Blue?

Ooo. Wish I'd seen that one. I'm using Diamine Sapphire, and while it's a strong blue, it lacks some of the pop of the big guys.

Monteverde Sapphire Blue is a vibrant ultramarine that leaps off the page in my notebooks, especially with the medium nib on my TWSBI Eco. That said, I propose it as an alternative rather than a substitute - as has been stated, there really is no substitute for BSB.

This is a scan (post #39) I did for the January Co-razy View thread, Waterman Serenity Blue, J. Herbin Eclat de Saphir and Akkerman Shocking Blue. THe Herbin was by far the brightest.

It is really difficult to get the colour to pop on the photo, but I have had a sample of BSB, and the similarity is high.

+1 for Monteverde Sapphire Blue-Monteverde Horizon Blue is fairly bright also.

It will depend on the pen and how it lays down the ink.

  • PR-DCSS blue is not BRIGHT out of my P51. It is a darker saphire blue.
  • N-LE is brighter than PR-DCSS blue.

Some of the tuquoise insk are pretty bright.

I find that Monteverde Horizon Blue a much better behaved ink than any of the three inks mentioned in the title. However, it doesn't have the pop of BSB.

You may want to consider Radiant Blue by Mr Pen in the UK, written up here.

I bought a bottle of Horizon blue based on your recommendation and its quickly become a favorite. Its not as intense as BSB but it still looks great.

Sadly, I also have a pen with waterman serenity blue inked and I lost my love for the color because of Horizon. Ive used serenity blue to test pens for years and almost overnight Ive decided to move to something new.

Waterman is safe and dependable and waiting for you to return to it when it seems the sensible ink for the job...

I suppose when I get tired of these young sexy inks I may return to the old reliable serenity. Its hard to totally turn away from a long term relationship.

Well stated.

then again the word "serenity" was ill-advised as it ties to something not too admirable for some of us...

Well, I keep going back to BSB - if this were a relationship, it would be co-dependent.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Oh, and now that I know I can get it out of any plastic, I love it even more.

It gives off an odor that bothers me as well, clouds me up after writing for an hour or so, I can start to taste it after two hours.

Then back to the shelf until I miss it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
