I have just acquired an auction lot that includes three Sheaffers:

The black Australian Snorkel is obvious of course. The capless one at the bottom is some sort of Vac filler that actually works; sadly it's barrel nib is cracked at the back.

The one I should like to know more about is the very pretty lever filler. Sadly this one's Lifetime nib has no tipping on its very large nib:

Thanks in advance,

Cob

Looks like a marine green Sheaffer Balance not sure on the size but could be an oversize balance.

Thank you for replying so quickly. and for the information. Can you give me an idea of the relative sizes for Balance and Oversize?

Thanks

Cobb, check out Richard Binder's site (www.richardspens.com). Search for Sheaffer Balance and in the article there's a chart with various models and their sizes. BTW in the same article is an excellent section showing the various Balance clip designs and their dates. Nice haul of pens!

Thank you Pen Lady. I shall study the site.

It seems that my pen is the standard sized one.

Many thanks

You're welcome Cob. There's so much information on Richard's site, I'm sure you'll have fun there!

Yes, thanks.

It seems as though my pen is from the first series (c.1930). Sadly - apart form the hopeless nib, there is a crack at the barrel threads. Never mind, I enjoy building Frankenpens, and I found that a large Osmia Supra nib fitted perfectly - and for me it is light years ahead of any Lifetime nib!

The crack can be repaired by a pro. Also, I believe, a replacement nib may not be hard to find for your pen.

Thanks for your reply.

A replacement barrel would be the route I think. The correct repair for a split barrel involves machining and the insertion of a sleeve - obviously completely financially non-viable for this pen which is not valuable nice though iit is. Here in England Sheaffer Balance pens are not common and importation from the USA is always so costly.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
